Once the crowd thinned out, Gillian got ready to say her goodbyes to Clara. “I’m heading off, Clara. I’ll see you at the Legion base tomorrow.”
A deep wave of gratitude washed over Clara for everything Gillian had done for her that day. Gillian, thank you. Let me walk you out, alright?”
“Your lab is about to be moved to the Legion base, and you need to stay right here and oversee it. Are you really willing to let just anyone get their hands on your data?”
Clara hesitated for a beat. She genuinely wasn’t comfortable with the idea, but the thought of letting Gillian leave alone unsettled her even more.
Right at that moment, a towering beastman strode into the lab hall, swept his gaze across the room, locked onto Gillian, and headed straight for her without breaking stride.
Gillian couldn’t quite make out his face from where she stood, but the bio-armor he wore was unmistakable. Every member of Merrick’s Sovereign Guard wore that exact same model.
“Captain Sterling, ready to head home? I came to pick you up.”
The newcomer pulled off his metal mask and revealed a rugged face beneath, stubble darkening his jaw, looking like a man who hadn’t slept in days.
“And you are?”
Gillian had been asleep the last time Dominic came around, so she wasn’t familiar with him at all.
“Dominic Prescott, Number Four of the Sovereign Guard. The boss sent me to come get you.”
A second later, a message from Merrick popped up on Gillian’s screen. “Gillian, something came up on my end. Dominic should have reached you by now, right?”
Gillian confirmed his identity, said her goodbyes to Clara, and fell into step behind Dominic as they headed out.
Gillian climbed into Dominic’s grip-buggy and the vehicle started rolling toward home. Dominic stayed quiet for most of the ride, but Gillian could see plain as day that something was weighing on him.
“Colonel Prescott, thanks for going out of your way to pick me up today. Come by the house for a casual dinner sometime soon. Numbers One, Two, and Three have already made it over.”
Dominic blinked, caught off guard by how openly hospitable Gillian was being.
“Thank you for the kind offer, ma’am, but I likely won’t have the time. I brought a lot of wounded beastmen back with me on this trip. Their condition is critical, and once they’re patched up, we’ll be heading back to the source of the taint.”
“You came back from the source of the taint? How many men did you bring with you?”

“About ten thousand beastman soldiers made it back, and that’s only part of them. Once we get this batch treated, we’ll have to rotate in the lighter cases.”
“Hold on, take the buggy to the medical team instead. I don’t have anything else on my plate today, so! might as well put in some extra hours.”
“Ma’am, are you sure about that?” Dominic hadn’t expected Gillian to volunteer to treat the soldiers
herself.
“Of course I’m sure, what’s the problem? Just trust me on this. The medical team only has ten clerics on staff, and ten people trying to treat ten thousand soldiers is going to stretch them thin. I can lend a hand.”
Dominic cared deeply about the men under his command, and the offer of help from Gillian lifted a weight off his shoulders. He twisted the buggy’s wheel hard to one side. “Then to the medical team it is.
ma’am.”
“Sounds good.”
Gillian knew her own body better than anyone, and right now she felt nothing short of pristine. Nobody in this entire city had more experience treating scalation than she did, which made her the perfect person for the job.
“Captain Sterling, what are you doing here?”
Sylas froze in surprise, since Gillian was supposed to be off duty today. Gillian gave him a casual, familiar
wave.
“All five treatment halls are packed to the rafters today. How could I possibly stay home and put my feet up at a time like this? Open up my queue, but flag it for scalation patients only.”
Gillian started off in the direction of Hall Five, while Sylas watched her go with a worried glance flickering down to her belly.
“Get moving, what are you standing around for? Harper and the rest are probably swamped today, aren’t they?”
“Yeah, they’re absolutely buried. I’ll get your queue opened up right away, Captain Sterling.”
Sylas watched Gillian sweep through the halls like a force of nature and couldn’t hide the deep admiration welling up in his chest.
Dominic jogged in behind her, slightly out of breath. “You really move fast, ma’am. I almost lost you back there.”
“Number Four, did you tell the lady about all this?”
“Not really. She asked me one question and I couldn’t dodge it… Hey, where are you off to?”
“Going to open up her queue.”
Sylas’ voice carried back to them from across the hall.
