Chapter 184 Frozen Boots
Chapter 184 Frozen Boots
Then ten females came up and handed each of them a metal box. “Thanks for the hard work.”
After delivering them, the women went straight back to their duties.
Iris was the last out of the treatment roons. She didn’t need to open her box to know what was inside. She stopped one of the females on her way out and read the name tag on her chest. It said Evelyn.
“Hold on, Evelyn. Who arranged this metal box for us?”
“Captain Sterling did. She said it’s your first day, and this small token of appreciation is to help you recover your psionic power faster.”
Evelyn delivered the message gently, then turned to leave.
“Captain Sterling is still inside?”
Iris glanced toward Gillian’s metal treatment room. The light was still on.
“Yes. She said her psionic power was strong today, so she’d stay a bit longer. She won’t take any more scalation patients tonight, just some general taint purification cases. Cleric Vale, please go rest.”
Iris didn’t say anything. She turned and walked away.
By the time she reached the cleric dormitory, her face had gone dark as a storm cloud.
Up ahead the other clerics strolled along, criticizing everything they saw.
“All the walls, all the metal corridors, they’re mithril-blended alloy. Nothing here can compare to the Capital Planet.”
“Who’s arguing? Even pure mithril has its limits against the taint. With it diluted by other metals, it’ll fall apart like soaked cardboard under a serious taint surge.”
“The Capital Planet has fully automated tech now. This Outer Planet feels like some uncivilized backwater.”
“Three years stuck here. How is anyone supposed to live like this? Where was Cleric Locke today, anyway? She’s not planning to bail on us, is she?”
Iris’ head was starting to throb listening to them chatter. Mostly, though, she was worried.
Elara had assured them over and over they would be safe, but after seeing how advanced the scalation cases were today, this taint contamination was far worse than any of them had imagined.
The elevator reached the second floor. The moment the clerics caught sight of the rows of frozen boots stuck to the floor, every one of them went silent and quietly slipped past.
Iris felt her own temper flare. She took a few steps past the boots, then turned around and ran back. She shaped her psionic power into a spade and started chipping at her own frozen boots.

Several minutes of grinding got her nowhere. Pure fury crossed her beautiful face.
“That woman is insane!”

Iris stormed away and slammed back into her dormitory. Who needed shoes? With Elara around, none of them were going anywhere anyway.
Down the now-empty corridor, more clerics came back out trying to chip their boots free, all failing, and chorus of cursing rose up.
Meanwhile, at Allheal Apothecary…
Elara lay on her side in bed. Her hair spilled down, hiding the smooth pale skin of her back.
The smooth curve of her waist stood out in the lamplight, and a closer look revealed the faint outline of an ice lotus tattoo there.
A man’s hand traced over the tattoo. Under his slow, kneading touch, the lotus deepened to a vivid pink, blooming open like a living flower.
His eyes darkened. His hand began drawing her body toward his.
“Stop.”
Elara caught onto his intent. She snapped her eyes open, slapped his hand away, and pulled her bio-armor
She got off the bed, backed up a few steps, and dropped to one knee on the floor.
“Master, last night I lost my head. I know none of this was something you actually wanted…”
“It was exactly what I wanted, Elara.”
The man’s voice carried a hint of amusement. Elara’s head jerked up, and shock left her speechless.
“What, surprised in a good way? I know you’ve been quietly carrying a torch for me for years. I gave you what you wanted last night. Isn’t that a good thing?”
The male on the bed had jade-green eyes. He lay propped on one side, his hand still curved as if her waist were still beneath it. When she pulled away, the warmth in his face vanished and his hand fell back to the
mattress.
“Why did you use yourself to save me?”
“Saving you is saving you. Why do I need a reason? You’re getting precious about this, all of a sudden.” Maddox stood up. His tall frame moved to stand in front of Elara.
Elara dropped her head immediately, but she could still feel a heated stare burning into the curve of her neck.
