Maddox’s voice exploded in her ear, dark and dangerous. “Decisions like this have always been mine to make, Elara. When did they start being yours?”
Elara shoved Maddox off hard, slapped a hand over her neck, and bolted out of the dim bedroom.
The moment she cleared the doorway with her hand still pressed to her neck, several pairs of cold eyes settled onto her.
Every nerve in her body lit up at the threat.
Several griffin beastmen waited in the outer hall. Some sat, some stood, all watching her emerge with frigid expressions.
These males in their cryogold bio-armor were Maddox’s Shadow Guard.
If circumstances ever called for it, every one of them was prepared to die for him.
She had to be on the third underground level.
This was Maddox’s temporary safe house.
“Ice Shadow. Where do you think you’re going?”
Shadow One ran a thumb over the metal blade in his hand. Cold light flickered along the edge. The blade was forged from top-grade frost-ice and could carve through any beastman below level 6 like a butcher’s knife.
“I’m not Ice Shadow anymore.”
Elara’s face stayed blank as she crossed the hall.
His eyes carried a flicker of confusion. “You’ve core-bonded with Master. Anywhere you go, you should be under protection.”
“My strength matches yours. I don’t need protection.”
Elara didn’t break stride. She kept walking toward the door. “In Wasteland City, the safest place is the 9th Legion. Nothing dangerous can touch me there.”
“You don’t have Master’s approval. You’re not leaving.”
Four black silhouettes closed around her in an instant.
Shadow One’s face stayed completely flat.
“That won’t do. For Master’s safety, you stay at his side. No leaving without permission.”
“I made my request clear this morning. I asked for the antidote. I never asked to bond. And a male like Master is only ever going to marry a female from a family equal to his own.”

Her feet stopped. Frost like a roaring dragon coiled through her palm. White psionic power threaded through her hair and let it tumble loose down her sides.
“He’ll find a way to break it. Now get out of my way.”
Elara couldn’t stay here. Gillian and Mabel were waiting for her at home. She had known leaving would be difficult. She had not expected this.
“Elara.”
A rich, deep voice rolled through the room.
Fully dressed now, Maddox stood at the doorway and called her by the old nickname he had used for her
once.
It wasn’t really an affectionate nickname. It was the kind of name a master used for a pet.
The Shadow Guard didn’t move aside. They stood waiting for Maddox’s next order.
Elara’s frost thickened in her hands. His aura was too strong to brush off, and it terrified her.
She came back to herself slowly. Nobody had called her by that name since she had become Ice Shadow.
Levi had gotten one thing wrong yesterday. Ice Shadow was never a single person. The title went to whoever was the best.
Since the day Maddox had saved her, she had made him the one thing she truly believed in.
But his attention had always belonged to the most outstanding. The females around him outnumbered the stars in a black hole.
Young Elara had only wanted to make sure her own silhouette appeared in his vision too.
So she had hidden it from him, gone into the black holes to prospect, almost died countless times. Over two years she had built a reputation in blood and results until she became the top Shadow of the Ice Shadow squad.
She still remembered the day she led her team in front of him to claim their reward. When she pulled off her mask, the look on his face had gone dark.
He had walked down from the dais and gently caught her chin. With that flawless, godlike face, he had let a small mockery slip into his voice.
“This is how badly you wanted me to favor you, Ice Shadow?”
A black storm had gathered in his green eyes in an instant, and every person in the hall had dropped to their knees.
That single look had shredded what was left of her pride.
She knew he didn’t want her.
