Sylas sent. “I buy sedatives at Allheal Apothecary all the time. I’ve never seen that buggy’s plate, and I don’t recognize any of those four.”
Gillian sent, “You know every employee at Allheal Apothecary?”
Sylas sent, “Not all of them. But most of them, yeah.”
Sylas trusted his own memory.
Dominic sent, “Ten’s memory is photographic, basically. If he says he hasn’t seen them before, he hasn Plus, those four reined their aura in, but their reading came out at level 3. I’m pretty sure they’re way stronger than that.”
All three of them nodded without saying a word out loud.

Tristan watched the three of them tap away on their wrist terminals and almost choked. It was awful being a fox with no terminal.
Gillian sent, “Sounds like Elara’s boyfriend is the owner of Allheal Apothecary?”
Dominic sent, “Owner or not, ma’am, we’ll drink him under the table.”
Sylas sent, “Allheal Apothecary sells sobriety pills. Pop one and you can drink the whole room under the table without feeling a thing.”
Gillian sent, “There’s a thing like that? Could Merrick take one?”
Dominic sent, “Holy hell, you wouldn’t really pull something that sneaky, would you?”
The three of them walked back into the living room and saw the male sitting at the dining table.
Elara sat by his side, tapping away on her wrist terminal as if handling business. The male was tapping on his own terminal too. They really did make a striking pair.
“Gillian, you made it. Who’s this?”
Mabel knew Sylas and Tristan, but Dominic was new to her.
“This is Dominic. He’s a friend of mine. He happened to have time tonight.”
The activity caught Elara’s attention.
She closed her wrist terminal and stood up with a warm smile. “Gillian.”
Gillian crossed the room in quick strides and threw her arms around Elara. Her throat felt dry. “Elara. You okay?”
Elara blinked, then hugged her back. “I’m fine. Don’t worry. I’m good now.”

“Really? You’re not lying to me?”
Seeing Elara alive and whole, Gillian couldn’t help wanting to hold on to her.
“I’m sure. Look here.”
Knowing exactly what Gillian was asking about, Elara forwarded her own health report.
Gillian glanced at the report. It was timestamped one hour ago. Her heart finally settled, and then a fresh worry took its place.
“Elara, aren’t you going to introduce us?”
Gillian was speaking to Elara, but her eyes were locked on the seated male.
He had an honest, rough-cut face, nothing close to handsome, with solid features and a sturdy build. Mabel had called him a real catch, but Gillian was filing some serious objections to the word “catch.”
“Gillian, this is Maddox. He owns Allheal Apothecary.”
“Maddox, this is my sister, Gillian.”
Since the introductions had started, Elara kept going. She gestured at the two males and one fox behind Gillian. “That’s Sylas, Dominic, and Tristan. All friends of mine.”
Maddox stood up. His tall frame was imposing, almost feral standing next to Elara. They weren’t a perfect match, but they weren’t an eyesore either.
“Hello, everyone. I’m Maddox Cole, Elara’s partner. Nice to meet you all. Please take it easy on me.”
That single sentence offended five people and one fox.
Elara stayed silent.
Mabel set the fruit on the table. Hearing this man claim Elara as his partner so flatly squeezed her chest tight. So fast?
Gillian gave a small cold huff. Partner? Says who?
Sylas, Dominic, and Tristan all thought the same thing. Partner? The man had nerve.
“Come on, everyone, take a seat. I had all of this catered from Winterhush House. The dishes are homestyle.”
Maddox was being polite. He stood up and pulled out the chair for Mabel.
“Oh, thank you, Maddox.” Mabel’s mood was complicated, but his manners, the way his eyes followed Elara, she noticed all of it. They had already core-bonded. Elara had to want this too, right?
Gillian and the others exchanged a look. As a group, they closed in around the seated couple.
