During the day, they had even swallowed up Levi’s airship parked in Wasteland City.

Back on the Capital Planet, Maddox’s branch of the jade griffins had probably already started moving against the Black Serpent clan. Until they had taken their pound of flesh, the Master’s fury wasn’t going to

case.

The only odd thing was Elara herself. She didn’t look the least bit pleased or shy. If anything, she looked like someone who didn’t want the Master at all anymore.

Gillian was working overtime until 7:30 and considering staying even later when Mabel’s call came in.

“Gillian, your sister brought someone home. Hurry back.”

Mabel’s voice carried an unmistakable thrill, but she kept her volume low. From the sound of it, she had snuck off to the kitchen to make the call.

Gillian’s mind raced. Elara had brought the antidote-male home?

She had a husband now?

Gillian narrowed her eyes. Through the gap behind Mabel’s shoulder she could see somebody seated at the dining table.

The image was too blurry to make out details, but the posture was good, and the person sat very close to

Elara.

Gillian dropped her voice too. “Grandma, who is it?”

Mabel matched her whisper. “Looks like your sister’s partner. He’s actually really handsome. A real catch!”

Gillian quickly paused her queue. The medical orderly outside got the notification and immediately explained to the waiting soldiers, telling them to head to a treatment bed for the night and they would be first in line at Gillian’s room first thing in the morning.

The soldiers looked a little disappointed at first, but the promise of being first up tomorrow brightened them right back up, and they trooped off to their beds.

“Grandma, let me finish up here and I’ll be home.”

Not long after Gillian shut down her queue, three figures showed up at her office door.

“What are the three of you doing here?”

Gillian opened the door to find Sylas holding Tristan, with Dominic standing next to them.

“Mrs. Cole, we’re here to take you home. The commander’s orders.”

Sylas had already changed into civilian clothes, a clean white checked shirt that gave him a fresh, easygoing look. He spoke in his usual unhurried way and was instantly likable.

Tristan coughed lightly and gave his pink fox tail a flick. “I’m coming to your place for dinner You said you’d cover my meals for three months.”

Dominic rubbed the back of his head with a hearty grin. “And I’m… here to fill out the numbers/

Gillian had been hesitating, but the thought of Elara bringing a male home sharpened her focus. She needed to size him up properly. She blinked at the three of them. “Can you guys handle your liquor?”

“Handle what?” Sylas’ eyes flickered with mild confusion.

“Liquor. Elara brought a guy back. Merrick isn’t home. Even if he were, he can’t drink. Can the three of you?”

“What?”

Sylas, Dominic, and Tristan all stared at her wide-eyed.

“What, none of you drink?” Gillian frowned. Elowen popped into her head. Maybe she could borrow a few solid drinkers from Winterhush House?

Sylas pressed a fist lightly to his lips. “I can manage a few.”

Dominic thumped his own chest. “Wasteland City’s number one drinker.”

Tristan let out a dry little laugh. “She brought a male home? It’s just a friend, right?”

Gillian shook her head. “Pretty much a sure thing. Skinny boy, just tell me, can you drink or not?”

Tristan was still reeling from the shock and didn’t answer. After years of shipping the wrong couple, he wasn’t sure how to recover.

Gillian saw the dazed look on Tristan’s face and figured the little jerk had finally gotten his heart broken. Whatever. A fox his age probably couldn’t drink much anyway. He was barely an adult, wasn’t he?

Looking at Sylas and Dominic with their tall, solid frames, those two would be enough.

“Let’s go meet Elara’s so-called future husband.”

She had barely had Elara back a few days, and now somebody was already trying to take her away? Not happening.

When Gillian got home, she spotted an unfamiliar grip-buggy parked in the courtyard.

Four plain-looking beastmen sat inside, the kind of plain you forgot the second you turned your head. You couldn’t even remember how many eyes they had.

The buggy carried a logo Gillian recognized: Allheal Apothecary.

Was Elara’s antidote-male from Allheal Apothecary?

Sylas had caught it too. He bought his sedatives at Allheal Apothecary regularly, but he had never seen
