Chapter 19 The Proot in the Flesh
Chapter 19 The Proof in the Flesh
George double-checked, frowning. “How can it suddenly be fine?”
Gillian offered him a reassuring smile. “Lt. Col. Parker, his arm really is healthy.”

The beastman soldier immediately scoffed, “Captain Sterling, if this is just a routine check-up, let’s not waste everyone’s time. Some of us don’t have the luxury of being this idle…”
Before he could finish, Gillian’s foot connected with his knee. He dropped like a stone, crashing to the floor.
His face went pale with pain. He couldn’t get up.
“What the hell-?!”
“How’s your leg? Does it hurt?”
“Of course it hurts, you kicked me! Lt. Col. Parker, I think she broke my leg!”
Realization dawned on George. He had lied. He’d used the medical metal on his leg, not his arm.
Without a word, George knocked him out cold. His gaze swept the room, sharp as a blade.
“Lock him up separately. Find out why he thought it was a good idea to mess with Captain Sterling. I want to know if he’s just got a problem with her-or if he’s got a problem with the Commander.”
A heavy silence fell over the hall. That was no small accusation. On one end, treason. On the other, harassing a female officer. Neither looked good.
“Yes, sir.”
The soldier was dragged away like a dead weight and thrown into a holding cell.
Message received. Gillian had connections. George was just the most visible of her backers. Who knew how many
T more lurked in the shadows?
Gillian shot George a look of pure gratitude. He’d backed her play completely. No words were needed.
“I know you all think the taint in your bodies is a joke.” Her voice rang clear through the hall. “So let me show you, right now, whether it’s a joke or not.”
She locked eyes with the nearest soldier. He shot to his feet without hesitation.
“Where did you use the medical metal?”
“My chest, Captain Sterling.”
“Take off your shirt.”

He hesitated, embarrassed, but didn’t dare disobey.
His bare chest was revealed to the room-smooth, unblemished. No sign of injury at all.
“Step onto the medical scanner.”
Relieved she wasn’t going to touch him, he quickly moved to the wall-mounted scanner.
“This is military-grade equipment. It can detect any injury, any illness. Let’s see what it has to say.”
Gillian wasn’t in a hurry to treat anyone. First, she wanted proof. Sometimes, seeing was believing.
The holographic screen flashed a cheerful green.
The bare-chested soldier exhaled in relief. Even the scanner found nothing wrong.
“What are you trying to tell us, Captain Sterling?” George’s heart was starting to race.

“Lt. Col. Parker, I thought about it all last night. The device I dismantled had a layer of isolation soil. I assumed it was there to contain the taint on the needles. But now I realize-it’s to fool the scanners.”
The isolation soil didn’t just block the taint on the needles. It clung to the body. It scrambled the readings.
It had been blinding the 9th Legion this whole time.
George’s expression shifted. He finally understood how they’d been deceived.
He started recording on his wrist terminal. The Commander needs to see this. Those bastards need to pay.
Gillian stepped forward. Golden psionic power sliced open the soldier’s chest.
Beneath the layer of healthy flesh, his heart cavity was a mass of rot. And only then did the scanner shriek in alarm.
The hall erupted.
“Taint! It’s really taint!”
The soldier stared at his own chest in disbelief. “How… how is this possible? I didn’t feel a thing.”
“Of course you did. You came in for a checkup, but the scanner showed nothing wrong. So you assumed you were fine.”
As Gillian spoke, a golden wave of psionic power shot down at once.
“Brace yourself. I’m going to clean the wound now.”
Before he could respond, a metal scalpel sank into his chest. He felt an icy, stabbing pain.
