Dominic sent, “Look at his face. White as a sheet. I’m pretty sure he’s already three drinks in.”

Gillian narrowed her eyes, slid a suspicious glance between Elara and Maddox, and set her trap.

“Maddox, you’ve got money, you’ve got the looks, How are you still single? Do Capital Planet males all marry late?”

Maddox’s eyes lit up. Gillian was a sharp one. “Not really. Just too busy to bother. Never had the time.”

Elara had already finished eating. She cradled a warm mug between her hands, and the line that floated through her head was less charitable. He had too many females in his orbit, liked this one, couldn’t bring himself to drop that one, and had gotten spoiled for choice.

“So how many girlfriends have you had? What broke up the last one?”

Gillian flicked her eyes down to the file Freya had sent her. One Hundred Questions for Vetting a Date. This one was sharp, designed to surface every red flag a guy carried into a relationship.

Maddox said, “Never had one. Up until yesterday, I didn’t even know what holding hands felt like.”

Every face at the table froze.

Maddox could really sling it.

Every answer was airtight. Maddox was a truly slippery old ox.

Gillian flipped through the booklet at lightning speed. “All right, Maddox. What about my sister hooks you the most? What’s your favorite thing about her?”

“Loving Elara was always going to happen. It’s fate.”

That answer was way off the script. Gag. Way too much.

Mabel cleared her throat. “I never watered the melons out back. Better check before they all die of thirst.”

Mabel made a clean break for the door.

Tristan made a small choked noise and bolted outside. He was about to be sick.

Dominic suddenly needed the bathroom too. He patted Sylas on the shoulder and lifted his eyebrows, suggesting they go drain the bilge together. Sylas was already pale by nature, but now a pink flush was creeping up his face. He cleared his throat. “Maddox, we’ll be right back.”

Just like that, the table cleared out.

That left Gillian sitting alone at the table.

Under the table, Gillian’s hand flipped through the booklet so fast the pages practically threw sparks.

Chapter 191 Trick Questions

“Gillian, thanks for having us tonight. I had a great time. How about we wrap up here?”

No way she was letting this end here. Gillian dropped the booklet, switched off her wrist termina), and went straight for the core question.

“So tell me, Maddox, what made you actually want to core-bond with my sister? Once that’s done, you two are tangled up for life.”

Maddox looked like the wine had finally caught up with him. He thought for a few seconds, then let his gaze drift over to Elara.

“Maybe it’s because whenever Elara hits trouble, I’m the first person she calls. That tells me she sees me as the strongest person in her world. She’d hand me her life. So why wouldn’t I bond with her?”

That was not the answer Gillian was expecting. Maddox’s answers kept landing way outside the normal

range.

His answers were off the charts.

If he had said Elara was beautiful, that would mean he was shallow.

If he had said Elara was rich or powerful, that would mean he was a gold-digger or a power-chaser.

But Maddox had taken the long way around and turned the question into a compliment for himself, claiming Elara was head over heels for him.

No way Gillian could keep drinking after that.

“So if you ship out tomorrow, what about my sister? Are you two splitting up?”

Gillian slammed her milk down on the table. This was the question she actually cared about.

Beneath the table, Elara’s hand and Maddox’s were nearly white from gripping each other. Once everything was finally out in the open, would living apart really be all right?

“That’s Elara’s call to make.”

Maddox’s answer was almost too perfect. The unwavering devotion in his eyes left Elara completely speechless.

No wonder Elara had fallen for him. He was mature and steady, intellectually sharp, wealthy, polished, and exactly the kind of career male every female noticed.

Tristan was left in the dust. He never had a real shot.

“Funny. I have a feeling that call belongs to you.”

A figure stepped through the doorway.

Gillian froze when she saw who it was, then jumped to her feet.

Merrick crossed to the dining table in an instant and slid an arm around Gillian’s shoulders. “Wrapped things up faster than expected, so I turned the ship around.”

Outside the courtyard, everything had gone dead quiet.
