Chapter 192 Brothers
Chapter 192 Brothers
“Elara and I have known each other for years.
“Anything goes wrong in her life, I’m the first one she calls.”
So this was Maddox Cole, the one Elara had been loyal to all this time..
But why would he core-bond with Elara? Was he actually in love with her, or did he have some other angle?
“My Gillian’s quick.”
“Your wife’s sister is a sharp one indeed.”
Merrick and Maddox let their hands fall back, and the air between them turned colder than before.
“If you two are brothers, why does it feel like there’s bad blood between you?”
Neither Merrick nor Maddox said a word. Both wore expressions of deep wariness.
“Gillian, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have come home today.” A flash of grief crossed Elara’s face, then smoothed into something like relief.
That hint of relief sent a chill through Gillian. Was Elara actually relieved that Merrick had blown the cover?
So Elara was in love with Maddox, but she had already guessed this was how it would end?
“Elara, come here.”
A sick feeling churned in Gillian’s gut. She reached for Elara’s arm, but Elara just shook her head. Merrick caught Gillian’s wrist and pulled her back, keeping her away from Maddox and Elara both. Merrick fixed his stare on Maddox in disguise. Maddox had arrived in Wasteland City the day before and had been laying smoke screens ever since. Was Elara really the endgame?
What was it about Elara that justified this much trouble?
“Maddox. You come all the way to Wasteland City and don’t give me a heads-up? I would have rolled out 1 the welcome wagon. Showing up at my house the moment I’m away. Got something to hide?”
The gentle, polite Maddox mask Maddox had worn momments ago peeled clean off, replaced by something cold and emptied of feeling. He looked like a different person entirely.
This was the real Maddox.
“Merrick. You’re sharper than I gave you credit for. I left you breadcrumbs, sure, but how exactly did you find me?”

Chapter 192 Brothers
Maddox actually sounded curious.
“You
ou want to know? Tough. I got played by you once. If I didn’t learn my lesson, I’d be a fool.”
“Merrick. Is this how you treat your own family?”

A thread of anger ran through Maddox’s voice. He pulled Elara tight against him and took a step back as if shielding her from Merrick.
Strangely, Elara didn’t struggle. She just looked at Gillian with quiet guilt in her eyes.
“You came to my turf, Maddox. Naturally I treat you to the full red carpet welcome. I haven’t forgotten what you did to me six years ago.”
Merrick pulled Gillian back with him in the same motion.
At the same instant, Merrick tapped a key on his wrist terminal. With one command, something like thunder cracked across the night sky.
In a heartbeat, the sky filled with airships, slicing across the dark like meteors and lighting up the little two-story house bright as day.
Gillian’s standalone house fell under the full control of the White Griffin System in an instant.
Gillian’s pulse hammered against her ribs as the tension closed in around them. She looked at the dangerous edge in Merrick’s eyes and thought of Mabel out in the back garden. “Merrick. Grandma’s still out back.”
“It’s all right, Gillian. Grandma’s already been pulled out.”
Gillian still couldn’t piece it together. Her thoughts felt slow. “When did you set this up? When you messaged me this afternoon? Or the day before? Did this start the moment Elara brought back the ten clerics?”
The more Gillian put it together, the colder her skin felt. “Sylas and the others were in on it too?”
“Gillian, let me explain it all to you in a minute. Okay?”
Gillian nodded. At the very least, Merrick was on her side of this.
Merrick walked Gillian out of the courtyard. He stared at the open layout of the house, front to back. wondering which way Maddox would try to run.
Gillian didn’t give a damn about Merrick’s so-called brother. She cared about Elara, and Elara was still inside with him.
Picking up on her worry, Merrick gentled his voice. “Don’t worry. Elara’s not in any real danger. You forget? Maddox core-bonded with her.”
“And the bond stops him from hurting her? What makes you so sure? Maddox came after you, and you’re family.”
