Chapter 193 The Cryolotus

Chapter 193 The Cryolotus

Merrick’s voice came out like ice.

The jade griffin let out a low laugh. “Merrick. You really think this’ll cage me?”

As he spoke, a glow flared up from his back, sweeping over the entire griffin body and over Elara behind him. The white light sealed out the rolling taint completely. He was about to force a path right through the encirclement.

Elara wrapped both arms tight around the griffin’s neck. A golden cryogold orb opened in her palm. She locked her hold on Maddox’s throat, and a gray force surged out at once, eating into both of their bodies.

Gillian saw it happen. Panic seized her chest, and her stomach turned to ice. She knew exactly how much the purge burned. “Elara!”

Gillian’s voice carried across to Elara, calling for her.

“Gillian… so this is the pain you went through last night?”

“Elara, are you out of your mind? You’ll kill us both doing this!”

The griffin’s voice came out like something from the underworld. Pain ripped through every inch of Elara’s body, but she didn’t loosen her grip on his neck.

“So we die. As long as I take you with me, I’m happy.”

The white light around them pulsed open and closed like a blooming white lotus, petals scattering and reforming endlessly. The cryogold turned liquid, edging each petal in molten gold and holding the taint at bay.

Elara’s pale fingertips were cocooned by the white petals, shielded from the taint’s bite.

Her heart, though, had gone fully cold. The Cryolotus Wrist Terminal System belonged to her mother, and it really had been sitting in Maddox’s hands all this time.

“Maddox, so you really do have the Cryolotus.”

“Elara. You and Merrick set me up? The heat powder, too. You did that on purpose?”

“I wouldn’t call it a setup. Your appetite’s just too big. You had the Cryolotus and you still wanted the Whue Griffin.”

The Cryolotus blocked out the taint, but the force Elara had smeared onto Maddox was eating steadily through her own body. Her voice trembled with the pain.

The griffin’s hooves stilled. He could hold out a while longer himself, but this force was vicious. At the rate it was working, Elara would be consumed within minutes.

If Elara died, even a level 9 powerhouse like him would take a brutal hit.

A pitch-black griffin had already caught up with Gillian on its back. The Sovereign Guard followed close behind, ringed by ten clerics for protection.

With the noose tightening, Maddox shifted back into human form. He scooped Elara up and ran his hands over her, searching for an antidote.

“Elara, what did you hit us with? Hand over the antidote. Now.”

“There is no antidote, master. Twenty years ago when you stole my Cryolotus, did you ever think you’d die by my hand?”

Elara coughed up a mouthful of black blood. Her body kept icing over the corruption, fighting back with the cold. Whether it was the unique nature of ice or something else, the purge slowed a little, though only by a hair.

“Elara! Come with me. I’ll make sure you rule Capital Planet at my side. The two of us, ruling together.”

Maddox laid out his offer.

That was one hell of a pie in the sky.

The purge ate into her hard. Elara coughed up another mouthful of hot blood, the warm liquid splashing onto Maddox’s hand.

“Maddox, you never actually meant to take me anywhere. Not twenty years ago. Not now.”

Maddox had never seen Elara look this empty of the will to live.

Weren’t they the same kind of person? Both of them did whatever it took to win, and both wore that frostbitten pride that never bent.

“You don’t want me? I core-bonded with you, didn’t I? Why not come back to Capital Planet with me?”

Maddox’s voice softened. He honestly couldn’t read what these females were thinking. He’d handed her exactly what she’d risked her life for, and now she didn’t want it.

“I used to want you. Right now, all I want is to protect Gillian and Grandma. Let the White Griffin swallow the Cryolotus, and Gillian becomes the most powerful person on Capital Planet. Why would she ever need to hide behind you?”

Watching Gillian sprint toward her, Elara pushed herself up despite the pain, only for Maddox to drag her right back into his arms.

His large hand clamped down hard on the rotting skin of her wrist, paying no mind to whether his own palm rotted along with hers.

“Elara. When exactly did you start planning to betray

me?”

A perfect calm sat behind his green eyes, as if he were asking about the weather.
