Gillian was left speechless.

“You ran that fast?” Merrick turned her face back toward him. “Were you afraid your sisters would get away? Or weren’t you worried I might take off?”

Look at her. She hasn’t spared a single thought for me. She’s still staring at Adrian.

His voice came out small and frustrated. He felt so pitiful, and still couldn’t bring himself to snap at her.

Before he got here, he had planned exactly how he would pin her to the bed and spank her. Then the metal door slid open, and Gillian smiled sweetly at him and said his name, and his heart just melted.

I’ll let it slide this time. If I hurt her, I’m the one who’ll suffer.

“Oh, come on,” Gillian said. “We just cleared things up. What happened with Maddox? Did he get away?”

Merrick let go of her and looked down at her.

“Why are you staring at me like that?” Gillian touched her face. “Do I have something on it?”

“I caught Maddox alive.” Merrick’s voice was laced with sarcasm. “Figured I should show my wife what I can actually do. She never thinks much of her husband. Thinks he can’t even catch a street rat. And when it’s time to fight, I’m never her first call.”

He scooped her into his arms, one arm under her knees.

“Look at the mother of my children. She talks trash about me in front of them every single day. Says I can’t perform. Time to show her whether I can or-”

Gillian clamped her hand over his mouth fast.

“I didn’t say that. I apologize. I shouldn’t have said it. What I should’ve said was-Commander Cole, how many enemies have you taken out?”

Merrick grinned. “Reporting to Mrs. Cole. I captured prisoners from three warships. As encouragement, shouldn’t you reward me?”

Gillian gave up struggling. She knew she was getting fucked no matter what she said.

So she leaned close to his ear and whispered her promise. “How about a honeymoon trip for two? Just us Just the two of us.”

Merrick stopped walking. That actually sounded interesting. “Expand on that. How exactly would just the two of us’ work?”

That pause was all Elara and Freya needed. They stepped in front of them.

Merrick got a headache just looking at them. Those two were experts at dragging Gillian off somewhere.

“Don’t tell me you’re planning to stop me so you can drag my heavily pregnant wife straight into a fight with the Phoenixkin.” He gave them a flat look. “Don’t make me laugh.”

“We wouldn’t. Commander Cole.”

Freya still felt uneasy around Merrick. She was a soldier who followed the rules, and even with her memories back, she still respected him. What she had done earlier was purely out of desperation.

“Captain Reed.” Merrick’s voice went cold. “You abducted and harmed my wife. I could shoot you right

now.”

Gillian’s hand found his waist at exactly the right moment and twisted. “Merrick, put me down.”

Merrick set her down gently. He knew she was about to plead their case. But did she really think he had ho principles?

“Gillian, what are you doing?”

Gillian could tell from his tone that he was genuinely furious.

“Let me introduce you properly.” She gestured. “This is Freya, my older sister. And this is Elara, my other older sister.”

Merrick kept his face hard and said nothing. The silence turned awkward fast.

“Freya, Elara.” Gillian turned to them. “This is my husband, Merrick. Grandma always says family has to support each other. If we’re all scattered, we’ll fall apart before the enemy even shows up.”

“Gillian,” Freya said quietly.

Elara kept her expression cold. She was worried the fire might spread to her.

The word “husband” from Gillian’s mouth cut Merrick’s anger in half. It wasn’t that he refused to accept Gillian’s sisters. He just had his own standards. In the Legion, mistakes had to be punished.

I screwed up before,” Freya said. “Commander Cole has every right to be angry”

She stood ramrod straight and snapped a salute, ready to accept her punishment She wasn’t just Elara She was Freya, a soldier of the 9th Legion.

“Commander Cole.” Gillian tried a different angle. “A mistake corrected is a mistake redeemed Our babies know that, right?” She glanced at her belly.

The sight of her trying so hard to plead their case wiped out what was left of his anger

“Captain Reed.” Merrick shifted his focus. “What’s the situation with your Blue Phoenix Wrist Terminal

“All three top-tier wrist terminals are acting strange right now,” Freya said. “After they ate each other’s data. they all started showing signs of evolution. I can’t return the data. Even it I wanted to, I physically can’t
