Merrick kept stroking Gillian’s back as he talked, his voice rising and falling in a steady rhythm. She fell asleep fast.

He never finished his story. But it didn’t sit as heavily as it used to. Now he had his wife beside him and his cubs on the way. He wasn’t alone anymore.

The sky was still dark when the Griffin Warship and the Chelone Warship split off. Dominic, Adrian, and Elara headed back to base with Freya and Mabel. Freya and Mabel were too fragile to stay, so they got hauled straight back.

With Dominic, Adrian, and Elara-three level 7 beastmen-plus Number Five, Six, Seven, Eight, and Nine from the Sovereign Guard, they could handle most problems even without Merrick there.

And if something went seriously wrong, the Griffin Warship was the fastest ship in Wasteland City. It could be back in half a day.

Gillian noticed Sylas and Tristan had been kept behind and looked puzzled.

“Sylas can fly,” Merrick said, already guessing her question. “Tristan’s glamour craft is strong. Anything alive, he can mess with its head. Works great on tainted beasts.”

Gillian’s chest went soft.

He picked them for me, didn’t he?

The route from Wasteland City’s main base to the taint’s source passed through three protective domes.

The first was a cryogold dome that covered the innermost base housing. It was the safest place in the entire city.

The second was a mixed mithril and cryogold dome past the main streets.

The third was another mithril and cryogold dome that stretched over the outer edge of Wasteland City itself.

After passing those three defensive lines, small outposts fanned out across the route toward the taint’s

source.

They were built for warships to land and restock. The beastman soldiers stayed hidden beneath Wasteland City. As long as they held the upper entrances, ordinary tainted beasts couldn’t break in.

About halfway through, a wide river stretched out ahead of them.

It used to have a beautiful name-Naiad River. It was also the main water source for Wasteland City.

The water absorbed the taint as it flowed through the city and then carried it farther out. That taint-laced water spread across the entire Outer Planet.

If the taint here wasn’t dealt with, the whole Outer Planet would be destroyed someday. Civilization would

“Sylas.”

s.” Tristan pressed his little paws against the window, his ears twitching. “You think there’s fish in there?”

Sylas didn’t come over. Gillian did.

“I want to know too,” she said. “Want to hop in and check?”

Tristan whipped his head around at the sound of her voice.

“The White Griffin scans show those aren’t fish anymore,” Gillian said. “They’re mutated fish beasts. Pretty big too. Your tiny self down there wouldn’t last long.”

“I’m not scared of some fish!”

Tristan felt his male pride taking a direct hit. He was supposed to be intimidated by a river fish?

“Is that so?” Gillian’s voice lilted. She lifted a finger. “Let me grab one for you to play with.”

Tristan narrowed his eyes.

What’s she up to now?

A second later, the White Griffin threw its river scan up onto the Griffin Warship’s display.

A massive fish appeared right outside the viewing window. It was covered in hard, jagged scales and looked nothing like a normal species. What used to be the length of an arm had grown to ten feet long, and it shot through the water like a blade.

The thing spotted the fox, opened its huge mouth, lashed its tail, and launched itself straight at the fluffy pink-white fox.

Tristan freaked out. His eyes flashed a beautiful pink mist. The fish paused for half a second-then more of them appeared around it, crowding the Griffin Warship’s display until it was completely packed.

Tristan got swallowed by that gaping, reeking mouth.

The fish cruised off the screen, satisfied.

Gillian snorted, “See? You can’t even beat the White Griffin’s simulated fish. Jump in for real and there wouldn’t even be scraps left.”

Her laughter made Tristan’s fur flush red. His pink-white coat was soaked with droplets.

She messed with me and got me all wet!
