Gillian had stepped away from him, like she was disgusted, and Tristan felt a weird irritation settle in his
chest.
He hadn’t been about to scratch her. He was the most gorgeous Glamour Fox in Firefox City. Hed topped the Outer Planet’s most desirable beastinate rankings for years.
Even Elara couldn’t keep her hands off my fur. Does Gillian really not see anything in me? Is the only thing in her ead fighting with me?
“I wasn’t going to scratch you,” he muttered. “I was just shaking off the water. You got me all wet.”
He sat up straight and shook hard, spraying droplets everywhere. A soft sigh escaped his throat, and he didn’t say anything else.
Behind him, Sylas sat in the co-pilot’s seat, going over the warship’s data on his wrist terminal. His usually cold face was locked in total focus.
Even Merrick was at the main controls, eyes glued to the display.
The whole ship only had two people with nothing to do-her and Tristan.
The Naiad River was both vast and small. The Griffin Warship would cross it soon. The two of them rarely stood together this peacefully.
The pink-white little fox flopped onto his back and rolled around lazily.
The early sunlight fell on Tristan like a soft gold veil. Every strand of fur trembled in the light, and the sun cut through the fluff, making his little fox body look like something out of a dream.
His big fluffy tail puffed out like cotton candy, practically begging to be touched.
Gillian couldn’t look away. She was actually getting hungry from staring at him. That fox looked exactly like a giant ball of cotton candy.
Her gaze swept over him, and Tristan started to panic. He definitely hadn’t been showing off on purpose.
But she’d finally noticed how good he looked. Maybe he could let her pet him. Just this once.
He fought down a shiver, and his voice came out a little shy.
“What are you looking at?”
“I was just thinking.” Gillian tilted her head. “You and Sylas are both single, right?”
What is she getting at?
Tristan didn’t answer right away. He glanced at the silver chain on his paw and hesitated. “I’m not exactly single anymore.”

“Oh, that’s too bad.” Gillian rested her chin in her hand, thinking. “I have to say, Sylas is something else Good-looking, good at medicine, keeps a cool head, can even pilot a warship. Total package Any idea if he’s seeing anyone?”
Tristan blinked, thrown off. “I don’t know,” he said slowly. “Sylas has plenty of people after him, but I dont think he has a public partner. You know how snakekin are, though. He’s never short on company.”
He paused mid-thought and frowned, staring at Sylas. “Sylas is snakekin. His type always looks for partners. He’s been an adult forever, and I’ve never seen a female’s stuff in his quarters. You think he still hasn’t found anyone?”
Gillian and Tristan both turned and stared at Sylas. Gillian’s mind went there.
Or… he can’t?
Maybe he’s taken so many suppressants he doesn’t even go into heat anymore.
Sylas had his back to the observation deck, but he could feel the heat of their stares. He turned and found both of them looking out the window like nothing was happening.
He pushed his glasses up, hiding the suspicion in his eyes. Snakekin senses were sharp. Maybe he’d imagined it.
“Something wrong, Sylas?” Merrick rubbed his brow, thinking Sylas had spotted a problem.
“Nothing, sir.”
Sylas turned back to his screen.
At the viewing window, the sunlight draped a gold veil over Gillian’s skirt, and her bare legs showed in glimpses. Sylas pulled his eyes away fast and didn’t look again.
Merrick followed Sylas’ gaze. Gillian was crouched in front of Tristan, she and the fox chatting away hike old friends.
Gillian cleared her throat. “Well, maybe not. He could just keep himself clean. So he doesn’t have a partner. You think he’d be a good match for Elara?”
“You want to set Sylas up with Elara?” Tristan’s mouth fell open. “But didn’t Elara form a core bond with 1 Maddox? She can still sleep with Sylas?”
“Listen to you, fox. So crass.” Gillian waved him off. “George told me you and Sylas are both head over heels for Elara. And you can form more than one core bond, right?”
