Chapter 208 Mother Wolf
Chapter 208 Mother Wolf
A sharp beep rang out. “Anomalous target detected.”
Gillian’s heart jumped. She sent the taint core’s coordinates straight to Merrick.
Merrick sent, “This location’s closest to us. Gillian, you holding up?”
She replied, “I’m fine. Let’s keep going.”
With Gillian by his side, Merrick was as safe as he could be.
Merrick sent, “Alright. If anything feels off, you tell me right away.”
The rest of the beastman soldiers were ordered back to the Griffin Warship.

Gillian shared the taint core’s coordinates with the warship too, and Sylas and Tristan immediately moved to pick up the soldiers before heading for her location.
Gillian and Merrick trudged through the dead terrain in their heavy bio-armor for about twenty minutes before reaching a crevice in the hillside.
This spot was far more dangerous than anything they’d crossed before, Thin trails of white smoke were already curling off Gillian’s suit, eaten away nonstop by the taint.
She tried to layer a shield of purification psionic power over both their suits, but the moment it flared up, the taint swallowed it whole. There was just too much of it here.
Her pulse hammered. If it was this bad here, what would the actual source be like?
Merrick sent, “Gillian, careful. Don’t use your purification power.”
They turned and spotted movement in the crevice. A female wolf, heavy with pups and barely breathing. lay trapped there.
Dead wolves were scattered around her, their bodies already rotting under the taint. The scale parasites feeding on the corpses were stirring, peeling themselves off the dead and crawling toward the dying
mother.
“Merrick, save her!” Gillian’s voice cracked with urgency.
The mother wolf and her unborn pups were hanging by a thread.
Merrick didn’t hesitate. He pulled the cryogold blade from his back and lunged at the three parasites skittering toward the mother wolf. The blade cut a cold arc through the air and slammed into the first one. The clash rang out sharply, sparks flying.
But the scales held. Not a scratch. Even the crushing pressure of his level 9 beastman aura couldn’t break through that thin layer of armor.
The parasites just lay flat against the ground and absorbed every hit. No matter how hard he hammered

them, they kept twitching back to life.

Gillian’s stomach sank. These wild parasites were tough. She called up her healing power fast.
A white glow shot from her palm and snapped around all three parasites like a whip, binding them tight.
Where her psionic power touched their scales, thin gray mist began to rise-the purge. The parasites twisted and shrieked as the mist ate at them.
Gillian forced her psionic power into their mouths and ripped out the crystals inside before they could
react.
“Merrick, these stones are huge,” she said. “They’re almost the size of level 2 crystals.”
He’d already seen her handle scale sickness before, so he left her to it and turned back to the mother wolf.
He took one look and stopped. The wolf was embedded in the taint core itself. Both her front legs were sunk into it. She was probably the reason it had gone active in the first place.
Merrick sent, “Gillian, I can’t save her. She’s inside the taint core.”
