Merrick knew she just felt sorry for the pups. But this was not a rational move.

He opened his mouth to shut it down, and then she gave him another reason.

“They’ve survived in this environment this long. If they’re still healthy, they might be an evolved species.”

That was what she really wanted to know. Genes like that were nearly impossible to come by. But whatif one of those pups inside the mother wolf had already been rewritten by the purge?

“Gillian, do what you need to do.” Merrick said. “I’ve got your back.”

He knew the real reason. She pitied them. Gene evolution? He’d been in Wasteland City for years and had never seen it happen. These pups probably weren’t it either.

But if this was what she wanted, he would make it happen.

“Then I’m doing it,” Gillian said.

She crouched low and stroked the mother wolf’s head. She pulled some clean water from her wrist terminal and trickled it into the wolf’s mouth.

The wolf’s eyes softened. She must have caught Gillian’s scent, because she closed her eyes right after. The moment her breathing stopped, Gillian cut into the belly and delivered the

pups.

Less than a minute later, two wet, bloody bundles lay against her chest. Together they didn’t even weigh a pound. They were too slick with blood to make out their coloring, but they were alive and healthy.

Gillian glanced at Merrick, and he understood immediately.

The dead mother was quickly swallowed by the taint. The parasites on her body started twitching back to life, ready to feast on the dead host before moving on to a new one.

The taint bleeding from the core finished consuming the wolf, and the parasites latched onto what was left, drinking it in.

An idea flickered through Gillian’s mind.

What if we filled every taint core with these things? Could they suck the taint dry?

But the low-level ones are already this hard to kill. If we accidentally bred a swarm of high-level parasites, that’s a whole new disaster.

The White Griffin drifted up and scanned the area. “Warning. Threat level A. Immediate cleansing recommended.”

“White Griffin, any good way to handle this taint core?” Gillian asked. She was mostly just throwing the question out there. If the White Griffin had a solution. Merrick would have fixed this wasteland long ago.

The White Griffin flapped its wings hard and circled around her. Lotus petals kept falling off its head Gillian half expected the thing to crash.

“Our calculations show three options. One, refine the taint to produce higher-grade energy stones-also known as blackstone. Two, introduce Binary Parasitic Beasts to absorb the energy and level up. Three. dump in large quantities of live hosts to feed the scale parasites and let them drain the energy/here’

Even Merrick’s brow furrowed at that.

“What are the success rates on those three?” he asked.

“Option one, 5%. Option two, 50%. Option three, 70%.”

That five percent made them lock eyes. If that were possible, Wasteland City wouldn’t be called Wasteland City anymore. It would be a gold mine.

“How do you refine the taint?” Merrick asked. “Besides cryogold and mithril, nothing even holds it withou corroding.”

Gillian had the same question.

The White Griffin’s body twisted, and its voice slowed, as if it was searching for an answer. Then it stopped.

“Data suggests the taint can be combined with a specific type of energy to refine it. What that substance is remains unknown. Extensive experimental data is required for further reasoning.”

Great. So that’s the same as saying nothing.

Gillian flicked the blood off her fingers. “White Griffin, can you go down into the taint core and scan what’s inside?”

The White Griffin flapped in a circle. “The taint is too dense. Detection beams cannot penetrate to view

the interior.”

“What if my psionic power goes down? Can you follow it?”

The White Griffin processed that and nodded. “That proposal has a 95% feasibility rate”

“What do you think, Merrick?”

“Do it.”

He relaxed a little when he realized she wasn’t going down herself. Only her power

“But what if your psionic power accidentally triggers a surge down there?” he asked.

“I’ve got a plan.”
