Chapter 212 The First Naturally Evolved Wolf Pups
Gillian froze for a second. She had no idea why Merrick was telling her this.

How could he not be here? I already changed his fate. He’s gonna stay alive in Wasteland City and lead the 9th Legion.
“Yes, sir.”
But she still paid close attention to how he set up the protective dome. A skill like that might come in handy someday.
By the time Gillian and Merrick made it back to the Griffin Warship, the two wolf pups were squalling from hunger but otherwise fine.
The warship had already moved away from that spot and found a stretch with lower taint contamination to cut down on the strain on the hull.
Sylas threw a towel over the pups and wiped the blood and birth gunk off their tiny bodies. Underneath all that mess, their fur was dark.
He got some milk into them, and the way they gulped it down made it pretty obvious these two were gonna pull through.
“Mrs. Cole, where’d you find these two?” Sylas asked. “They’re actually kind of cute.”
Gillian was scanning their health report. A thought was nagging at her.
These two survived. Are they Binary Parasitic Beasts too?
“Right at a taint core,” she said.
Sylas’ face shifted.
These fragile little things survived inside a taint core?
Once the pups had their fill, their tiny heads started bobbing, and they squirmed away from Sylas. They pressed themselves against the incubator wall and started whimpering, completely on edge.
Gillian watched them and felt her chest tighten.
“Sylas, why are they crying like that? You think they’re still thirsty?”
“They were just born. Probably scared of everything. They want their mother.”
“Their mother’s dead,” Gillian sighed. “She hung on so long down there. Waited till Merrick and I showed up. Feels like I was meant to find these two.”
“Were you the first one to hold them?” Sylas’ voice went softer. “You could try. See what happens.”
“Me?”

She remembered the pups had been curled up against her chest earlier. She reached out and tapped one gently on the ear.
The pup instantly started crying even louder, but the sound was different now. More like a sad little whine. Almost like it was complaining.
“You two actually know who I am?”
The second she spoke, the pups followed her scent straight to her hand and latched onto her fingers.
They sniffed her, warm and full, and each one wrapped itself around a finger and passed out.
“Sylas, did they eat enough?”
“Yeah, they ate a ton. They were definitely hungry.” Sylas paused. “Mrs. Cole, I think these two have imprinted on you. They think you’re their mother.”
He watched the way she handled them. She had this whole maternal glow going on. Like she really was their mom.
“Yeah?”
Gillian’s eyes went back to the readings on the pups. The results didn’t label them as Binary Parasitic Beasts, but one thing was clear: their stats were three times higher than a regular wolf’s. At the same level, three ordinary wolves wouldn’t be able to take one of them down.
These had to be the first naturally evolved wolf pups anyone had ever come across. Give them another hundred years to evolve, and this wasteland might just produce a brand-new apex predator.
“Little ones,” Gillian murmured. “I don’t know if running into me was your luck or your curse.”
“Luck,” Merrick said. “If you hadn’t found them, they wouldn’t have lasted fifteen minutes.”
He’d peeled off his bio-armor and walked over. He leaned in and slid his arms under hers from behind, looking at the display with her. His damp hair brushed her ear, carrying a faint trace of water.
He already showered? I haven’t even gone yet.
His scent hit Gillian then-pine and woodsmoke. It wrapped around her at once, like he was marking his territory, letting everyone know she was his female. Hands off.
Sylas stepped back, gave a quick salute, and got out of there.
