Arthur stood there holding a metal box. It looked like any other storage container, nothing special.

Merrick took it and popped it open. He wasn’t the type to get rattled easily, but the second he saw what was inside, his eyes went wide.

The box was full of black stones shaped like root segments. Smooth surface, no grain.

Merrick stared.

Why do these look so damn familiar?

He waved a hand. Every beastman in the monitoring room cleared out. Sylas was the last one, and Ke pulled the door shut behind him.

Merrick’s voice dropped. “Walk me through it. Where did these blackstones come from?”

“Yes, sir.” Arthur sucked in a breath and got himself together. “You gave the order to ship the flower beast’s severed roots back to Wasteland City for analysis. The leftovers got stacked in underground storage. When they went in, they were still fresh. One morning later, they looked like this.”

Merrick’s brow pulled tight.

Turned from roots into stone in a single morning? That doesn’t track.

Merrick asked, “Did the roots sent to Wasteland City change too?”

Arthur shook his head. “Already checked. Those are still normal. Only the ones that stayed in underground storage turned.” He paused. “I scraped a piece off one of the roots in the box and ran it through the warship’s analyzer. It’s pure blackstone.”

Merrick gave him a sharp nod. “Good work, Major Porter.”

“Thank you, sir. I came straight here the second I confirmed it. The storage room’s locked down. Nobody’s getting in.”

“Any theories on what caused it?”

Arthur hesitated. Merrick set the box on the table. “I said speak. Spit it out.”

“My guess is the roots that changed got exposed to the taint. The ones packed up on the Griffin Warship never touched contaminated air.”

The underground base always had trace taint floating around, nothing like the clean environment onboard the warship.

Merrick’s gaze cut straight to Lily on the display.

So blackstone forms when Binary Parasitic Beast flesh mixes with the taint?

“White Griffin, scan.”

A White Griffin flickered onto the display in front of him.

The bond let both him and Gillian access the system. The White Griffin got clearance from Gillian and locked onto the metal box.

“The newly formed blackstone contains traces of white lily root tissue. Ninety-five percent probability thi is the special substance. It binds with the taint and petrifies it, refining it into blackstone.”

That’s it. So all that blackstone under Wilder Peak is dead Binary Parasitic Beasts?

But this chunk of blackstone had no isolation soil coating it. Either the refining time was too short, or something else was at play.

Merrick shot the results to Gillian.

Gillian read the data and her gut twisted.

All that blackstone under Wilder Peak. Is that just a graveyard for these things?

“What’s wrong, Mom? Why are you looking at me like that?”

“Lily, can you tell me where you came from?”

Gillian studied the tangled mess of Lily’s hair. It didn’t smell bad. Maybe that was the white lily thing. A regular beastman would’ve reeked by now.

“Mom, didn’t you have me?” Lily pointed at Gillian’s belly, thinking back to the videos she’d just watched. “You’ve got two more babies in there. Just like me.”

So she could sense Elias and Asher. Gillian’s expression went even softer. “Lily, tell me how you ended up in that dark hole. Why were you living down there?”
