But how fast she was forgiven did something to Gillian. She could really be a mom to this one. Raising one was no different from raising three.

She kept the videos playing and started teaching the flower beast to talk.

Two years old, but her brain was already ahead of most seven- or eight-year-olds. In just a few hours, she/ went from halting single words to full, easy sentences.

Gillian fed the White Griffin every soft, gentle thing she could think of. Kindness. Generosity. She wanted to leave a mark on that heart. Something good.

She stroked the flower beast’s hair. “Your beast form is a white lily. So I’m gonna name you Lily Sterling. Do you like it?”

Lily looked at her. She didn’t say yes right away. “Why do I need a name?”

“Because a name makes you a real person. You’d be Lily. The one and only Lily Sterling.”

“Is that good?”

“Of course.”

“Then what’s your name, Mom?”

“My name is Gillian Sterling. And Dad’s name is Merrick Cole.”

Gillian wrote Merrick’s name out too.

Lily frowned at it but let it go. “Thank you, Mom. Then I’ll be Lily.”

“Good.”

It was time to feed the purge to the babies in her belly. Gillian pulled a taint vial from her wrist terminal and started refining it right in front of Lily.

She only made a small amount, but it grabbed Lily’s attention instantly. A thick root shot out and snatched it. Two stirs, and the thin wisp of purge was gone.

“Taking without asking is stealing. Grabbing is worse. You don’t just take. Remember this. If I give it to you, then you can have it.”

Lily’s smug little face went stiff.

Gillian kept refining. She fed the purge to the babies and felt Lily’s burning stare the whole time.

Two of the black lily buds in her hair bloomed open from pure want. The scent hit Gillian like a wave. Thick and way too sweet.

“Warning Lily scent will attract bat beasts from the wasteland. Caution. Caution.”

Chapter 220 Bigger Than a Taint Core Blowing

The White Griffin’s alert made Gillian’s scalp prickle.

You’ve gotta be kidding me.

She pushed a stream of purge straight into Lily’s mouth and prayed she’d just shut up and eat. Once Lily was full and satisfied, Gillian pulled out a cryogold sphere.

“There’s about two drops of raw purge concentrate in here.”

She used her gold psionic power to carve Lily’s name into the sphere, then pressed it into those tiny hands.

“I’m giving this to you. As long as you don’t hurt the 9th Legion’s beastmen, I’ll refill it with two drops every week. Lily, do you hear me?”

“I hear you, Mom.”

Lily twisted the sphere open, giddy with excitement. The second she saw the concentrate inside, her eyes lit up. That was it. The moment that sphere opened, she was completely won over.

Gillian pulled her close, a warm smile spreading across her face.

In the middle of all that black, dead wasteland, the image hit different. Soft. Almost hopeful. The kind of thing that made your chest ache.

Merrick watched the display, locked on every frame. His eyes never left Gillian and Lily. When that gentle smile finally settled on Gillian’s face, his fist unclenched.

“Mrs. Cole’s really something.” Sylas said. “Even that vicious little thing accepted her.”

His shoulders eased, and his gaze drifted to the figure behind Gillian. He caught the details on the screen. Tristan looked steady.

“Tristan looks fine. Gillian pulled him back in time. No injuries.”

“Yeah. Tris pulled his weight in there,” Merrick said. “I owe him something good when he comes out.”

The timing between Tristan and Gillian had been flawless. Winning Lily over was a major win.

A beastman came barreling down the corridor. Heavy footsteps, fast. Something urgent.

“This is Major Arthur Porter, Logistics Officer. I need to report to the commander face to face.”

The guards at the door stopped him and checked in with Merrick before letting him through.

Merrick knew every officer in the Legion above a certain rank. Arthur had been in the wasteland for five years. Steady. Unshakable. He’d never seen the man rattled before.

“What’s going on? You look like you just saw a taint core blow.”
