Chapter 227 An Egg-Shaped Object

The red-haired girl stared at Lily’s sphere, then down at the one in her own hand.

Gillian smiled and stepped in to brush her hair back. “I’m Gillian Sterling. If you want, you can call me Mom, same as Lily.”

Her psionic power drifted like a ribbon and swept softly across the girl’s cheek. “The purge you picked up

on? That was me.”

She wasn’t their real mother, but she could be the one who raised them.

The spider lily clutched the cryogold sphere and licked her lips. “So…. will Mom always have the good stuff for me?”

“Obviously.” Merrick’s voice sliced in, ice-cold. “If you follow the rules.”

He looked down at her. “You hurt someone, you let those roots run wild, and next time losing a few won’t be the end of it.”

The spider lily backed up, roots flaring sharp.

Merrick’s brow knit tight, and his Level 9 beastman aura pressed down on her like a hammer. His voice left zero room for argument. “What, you got a problem with that? Wanna go again? I’m right here.”

The searchlights caught him in the dark and threw his shadow long. Spine straight. The pressure bleeding off him turned the air solid. Even the hand on his blade looked like it was itching.

The standoff was one breath from snapping. Then a warm hand closed around the red-haired girl and pulled her in.

“Can I call you Ruby Sterling? I know you’re a smart kid. You and Lily are both good kids. Will you come back with us?”

The red-haired girl breathed Gillian in. She felt the two kindred things in her belly and nodded.

“Mom, we can’t leave yet. The bugs are gonna take Ruby’s cave. Once they drink up all the black water, we won’t be able to fight them off.”

Gillian looked to Merrick, waiting.

“We drain it,” he said. “Easiest way. Forge a big pool out of cryogold and mithril, haul it to base, let the clerics purify it.”

Solid plan. The extras could be refined into the purge. Their flower beast crew was only gonna grow, and the purge was the only thing keeping them in line.

“Once it’s built, you two go down and bring the black water up,” Merrick told them.

That’s exactly the job for them.

Chapter 227 An Egg-Shaped Object

Ruby just stood there.

Lily leaned in and whispered, “Don’t stress. Dad looks mean, but he’s actually…”

She cut herself off. Merrick had turned his head and pinned her with a stare. She swallowed the rest.

Actually, he really was mean. She’d never seen him smile at anyone except Gillian.

Ruby squeezed Lily’s hand and got it. Merrick was a force so heavy that even the air gave way to him.

Luckily, the 9th Legion had mithril-reinforced metal on hand. Not as good as cryogold, but it would hold.

Merrick had it melted and poured into a huge pool set on top of a high tower. If the scale parasites wanted a sip, they’d have to crawl out into the open.

A deep gulping sound rolled through the feed. Whatever was drinking was in a serious rush.

Gillian watched the White Griffin’s feed like a holovid.

Lily peeled off her bio-armor. She and Ruby shared a look and dove into the black pool one after the other.

Lily shifted, her flower form bursting up through the dark water. Ruby broke the surface right behind her, a full spider lily in bloom.

Soft light glowed from both of them against all that black. Then they started gulping. Hard.

Gillian stared at the metal container in her hands.
