“You’re spoiling them,” Merrick said. “These two juveniles are way too clever. We need a way to keep them under control.”
Gillian said, “I’ve been thinking about that. Once the taint’s cleared from the source, what if we give them that land? They stay on their side, we stay on ours.”
“That could work.”
He hadn’t figured she’d thought that far ahead.
Gillian added, “On our own turf, we can cover them however we want.”
“You’re not wrong,” he said. “The 9th Legion can handle keeping an eye on a handful of flower beasts.”
“Merrick, look at this. I pulled it from the dried-up pool.”
She held out two oval pieces of shell, jade-smooth, maybe eight inches long and six inches wide.
“Looks like some kind of eggshell. Something hatched out of it.”
The two flowers climbed down from the tower.
Ruby saw them holding her seed shell and went shy. “Mom, why are you holding my seed shell?”
It had sat in that black pool for ages and never dissolved. That shell was tough.
Gillian handed it back. “I thought it looked pretty, so I grabbed it. Didn’t know it was yours. Here.”
Ruby said, “I don’t really need it. The black water was supposed to soften the shell so I could soak up the purge inside. Once it cracked open, I never got the purge again.”
“So you lived inside this?”
“Yeah. If you think it’s pretty, I can give it to you.”
Gillian’s brain was already spinning. These shells would be perfect for storing taint liquid. Two years in that pool and not a spot of rot. Only the seams showed they’d been cut open.
She and Merrick locked eyes. Same thought. If every flower beast had one of these, they could forge a full set of taint-proof gear. Or at least the perfect containers.
“Then I’ll take them.”
Gillian didn’t bother being polite. She was already eyeing the other taint cores.
“Lily, is your shell still in the black pool in your cave?”
Lily nodded. “Mom, you want my seed shell? I’ll go get it.”

Gillian’s eyes sparked. “When we head back to Wasteland City, we’ll grab it. Can you and Ruby bring up more flower beasts?”
Lily shook her head, disappointed. “Mom, I want to, but I’m out of purge.”
Gillian handed Ruby’s shell to Sylas without missing a beat.
Sylas spread his brown wings and shot up the tower, then came back down with the shell brimming with
taint.
Gillian took it and poured her healing psionic power in at full throttle. Even redlining, she only converted about a sixth of it into raw purge concentrate.
It pooled at the bottom, a shallow little puddle. Hundreds of drops at least. The scent alone had the two flower beasts going unfocused.
“You two got here first. So you’re in charge of the ones who come after.”
Gillian popped open Lily’s cryogold sphere and filled it to the top. Same for Ruby.
“All of this is for me, Mom?”
Lily was shaking. The few drops from before had vanished before she could even taste them. Now a whole sphere was hers. Best thing ever.
Ruby kept it together. She held her sphere tight and just said, “Thank you, Mom.”
