Chapter 23 The Record Doesn’t Lie
Chapter 23 The Record Doesn’t Lie
Sylas’ mind flashed to Gillian that timid, sweet-smiling creature from earlier
First she’d kicked them all out. Now she was poisoning the wei! against the entire medical team?
A dark, predatory fury coiled in his chest. Beneath his glasses, his lips thinned into a cold, hard line.
“So. It’s Gillian. She’s the one accusing us?”
“Come see for yourself.”
Sylas sneered. So Gillian is here to stir trouble in the 9th Legion.
She isn’t fit to lick Ms. Locke’s boots.

But a female capable of bringing out the feral brutality of his serpentine nature? That was someone to watch.
Sylas forced down the killing intent roiling in his veins. He gathered his medics and followed George.
He’d see exactly what kind of lies Gillian was spreading.
Inside the metal hall, Tristan was hit by a wave of putrid stench the moment he entered.
The hall was packed with beastmen. So Sylas had been right.
The medical metals were compromised?
The 9th Legion had sunk serious money into this batch. If they were all defective… the damage would be catastrophic.
His eyes darkened. He caught the attention of a nearby soldier. “Is Ms. Locke here? I used one of those metals. I need her to confirm I’m fully healed.”
“Major Lawson?” The soldier blinked. “Ms. Locke left three months ago. The only cleric on staff now is Captain Sterling. She just went on break. She’ll be back in an hour to resume treatments. You can wait here if you like.”
Elara was gone?
He’d thought Merrick was lying. But he’d been wrong.
Tristan asked, “Did she say when she’d return?”
“No word on that. But Captain Sterling is excellent. Her technique is incredibly gentle. Look-the patients she just
treated didn’t even need an anesthetic.”
Didn’t need an anesthetic? Tristan frowned, keeping his voice carefully neutral. “So the 9th Legion has no clerics
besides Gillian?”

“No, sir. Not right now.”
“Do you need an anesthetic?”
Tristan’s head whipped around. A soldier nearby was watching something on his wrist terminal.
He recorded her?
“I can handle it. No problem.”
Gillian’s face was pure deception-innocent and sweet.
Is that how she fooled everyone?
Tristan opened his mouth to dismiss these soldiers as idiots blinded by a pretty face- and stopped.
The woman on that screen was a completely different creature.
Her blade work was flawless. Her control over her psionic power was perfect.

Some clerics had such an intense aversion to germs that they’d wear sterile gloves and keep their distance, refusing all physical contact with patients.
But Gillian on that screen? Her white robe was splattered with blood. And her expression-through it all-held nothing but solemn respect.
Tristan found himself watching for ten full minutes.
Only when the soldier shut off the video did he tear his gaze away.
Something was very, very wrong.
Every single soldier in that footage had taint lurking in their wounds. And one by one, Gillian healed them all.
This wasn’t some fresh-faced novice cleric. She was more skilled than most level 2 clerics.
Too many questions surrounded Gillian.
His eyes dropped to his own arm. He remembered her soft hands sliding the metal on. So gentle.
Gillian. Well played.
Gillian followed her escort to a small white metal building.
“This is cleric housing, Captain Sterling. I’ll leave you here.”
“Thank you.”

She stepped inside and immediately spotted the guidance markers on the walls.
So her earlier suspicion was correct. The medical tearn had deliberately sabotaged her.
