Chapter 24 A Moment’s Peace
Those four hours this morning-she couldn’t deny the exhilaration.

She had a healthy body. Psionic power thrumming through her veins. Her core spun like a well-oiled machine.
This was what it felt like to seize control of her own destiny. She almost wept from the sheer relief of it.
A white bathrobe slipped from her shoulders, revealing soft skin beneath. She tossed her uniform into a basin to
soak.
Bare feet shuffled into slippers. She flopped onto the plush bed, sinking into its softness.
She sat sideways against the headboard, towel-drying her hair.
Her heart was strangely still. A quiet happiness spread through her chest.
“This bed is really soft,” she murmured.
Grinning, she bounced a few times, thoroughly satisfied.
Maybe she should buy one just like it for home.
She dried her hair to a damp fluff, then stretched out spread eagled on the mattress.
She closed her eyes in pure bliss.
She tapped her wrist terminal, scrolling through the StarNet marketplace. Searched for the bed.
A quick search later… no dice. They didn’t sell this model.
Useless.
Her terminal buzzed with an incoming message.

It was a video from Mabel. She was arranging the living room, making it just as warm and homey as their place in Goldspine City. She pointed out which room was Gillian’s, and which was Merrick’s.
Merrick’s name made her thoughts stall for two full seconds.
The dangerous eyes surfaced first. He was impressive-she couldn’t deny that. But she still hadn’t figured out how
to be around him.
At the end of the video, Mabel laid out fresh ingredients on the counter, listing all the signature dishes she’d make
for dinner.
“Grandma, everything’s fine. Barring any surprises, I should be home in time for dinner. I’ll invite George and Freya.”

She’d just sent the message when there was a knock at the door.
Who at this hour?

Someone kept knocking violently and urgently.
Gillian shut off her terminal and padded silently to the door.
She peered through the one-way window.
A male beastman stood outside, caked in gray-white mud and grime. Tall. Broad. He filled the doorway.
She couldn’t make out his features through the filth, but his eyes… cold and empty. Like a killing machine.
Even through the thick metal door, she could feel the murderous aura radiating off him.
At least level 5. Maybe higher.
She stopped breathing without meaning to.
“Open the door, Captain Sterling. I know you’re back there.”
Impressive. He could hear my breathing?
She quickly messaged the patrol. “Someone is causing trouble at my door, disrupting my rest.”
But she didn’t relax her guard. A blackstone was already in her palm.
Her clear eyes darkened with a depth that belied her years.
Given the way that beastman carried himself, this thick metal door might not even slow him down.
She ran through every enemy she could think of.
None of them would be stupid enough to attack her in broad daylight inside the 9th Legion. [
“Who are you? This is Captain Sterling’s rest period. If you need treatment, report to the main hall.”
The patrol arrived faster than she’d expected. But after a few exchanged words and whatever the mud-caked beastman showed them, they left.
Whoever was outside had to be inside the legion.
“Gillian. It’s me. Open up.”
Gillian’s heart stuttered.
The beastman at the door stepped aside, revealing the figure his companions were supporting.

He putted off a strange, angular mask and managed a weak smile.
It was Merrick.
