Freya moved the second she heard Elara. She crossed to her and put a hand on her shoulder. “Elara, Gillian was north with the flower beasts. She’s not there?”

“North finished first. When I got there, they were cleaning up. Gillian was gone. I thought she had come to find Commander Cole.”

Elara had just been there. Gillian was the only one missing.

Freya caught the wrongness and shook her head. “I just came from the east. Didn’t see her.”

That was when it hit. Nobody had seen her.

“Wait.” Elara’s voice sharpened. “Commander Cole, I saw you in the north. You went after her.”

Merrick’s eyes narrowed. Cold shot through him. His fingers twitched on the blade. His face stayed hard, but his eyes were barely holding.

His voice came tight. “She never came to me. I never went north.”

The words were ice, but the tremor bled through.

“That’s not possible.” Elara’s voice climbed. “I glanced at the Cryolotus during the fight. I swear I saw you with her.”

She’d seen him. She’d been sure.

If that wasn’t him, then who?

“I was west the whole time,” Merrick said. “I never left.”

The three sensed the grave situation, a heavy, deadly tension hanging in the air.

Merrick triggered the White Griffin Wrist Terminal. The metal heated in his grip. The playback flickered, and when the face on the screen matched his own, the pressure around him cratered. Killing intent bled off him in silence.

“Someone wore my face,” he said. The words came through his teeth, soaked in murder.

He took a flyer from a soldier and shot forward, the tail flare cutting a red line across the sky.

Elara grabbed Freya’s hand. Her fingers were ice. “Freya, we’re going after her.”

“Yeah. Don’t spiral. Maybe it’s nothing.”

Freya forced a thin smile. No psionic power left. Exhaustion and cold dread that someone had pulled Gillian away made her vision swim. She locked her arm around Elara and hauled herself onto the flyer

anyway.

The rest of you, help the Legion clean up and get back to the warship.” Elara ordered.

“Yes, Captain Sterling.”

Elara left the clerics and shot toward Gillian’s last coordinates.

As they passed north, they spotted Lily and Ruby. The two giant flowers were impossible to miss. Their roots swept corpses like brooms. Anything moving got crushed.

“Lily. Ruby,” Elara called down.

Lily and Ruby had grown close to Freya and Elara these past few days. At the sound of their voices, they lifted their heads.

“Aunt Freya. Aunt Elara.”

“Where’d Gillian go?”

“Mom?” Lily straightened. She hadn’t seen her in a while.

A root scratched at her bloom while she thought, then pointed. “Mom? Let me think. Yeah, I saw her carrying Camilla that way.”

“Same.” Ruby nodded. “I caught a glimpse. The Glamour Fox went too,”

Both of them had seen it. Someone who looked like Merrick had pulled her away.

Elara’s chest eased a little at the news Tristan had followed. She’d seen him in human form earlier. With him there, Gillian had a shot.
