“Commander Cole, wait.” Elara’s voice cut through the air. “Gillian’s not stupid. She wouldn’t follow someone wearing your face straight into a hole.”
Elara didn’t think Gillian was that foolish. How could she be fooled so easily?
At the same moment, all three wrist terminals blared alerts warning them not to advance.
“Dad Merrick, let us check.” Lily unwound her roots from Elara’s legs. “Send the White Griffin with us.”
Lily and Ruby dropped off the flyer and jumped without stopping. Freya and Elara barely got Blue Phoenix and the Cryolotus after them before they vanished.
“White Griffin, you’re coming with me,” Merrick commanded.
The command was absolute. The White Griffin blocked him anyway.
Merrick killed the system. The display stuttered black. Nothing was stopping him.
The killing intent in his eyes surged. “Whoever did this, I’m burning him to ash.”
Gillian was inside the belly of a level 8 scale parasite. The stench was thick enough to drown in.
Two smaller parasites nearby held Tristan and Camilla.
She still didn’t know what the figure wearing Merrick’s face had done to her. Its strength was terrifying, and she had a gut feeling it was at least as strong as Merrick.
She fought to open her eyes. Nothing. Inside the parasite, the dark was absolute. Even the White Griffin couldn’t find her.
Her only edge was the way she was wedged, ear pressed to the reeking scales. She strained to hear.
Then she heard Merrick’s voice. They were talking about getting her out, but she couldn’t move or even
twitch.
Merrick, I’m here.
The scream stayed locked inside. Her body was stone. Her lips wouldn’t move.
When she heard him say he was shutting down the White Griffin and jumping in after her, despair and terror crashed over her like a wave.
She clawed at her own mind, but her body wouldn’t respond.
Don’t jump. That hole is a trap. It’s for you.
Then Lily and Ruby went in. The power inside Gillian fought the restraints and couldn’t break through.
1/2 Gold and white psionic power slammed against each other inside her and went nowhere. If she could see

herself, she’d have spotted the thin layer of scale skin wrapped around her, scaling her shut.

It had gone down fast, near dawn. She’d been watching the feeds. Her side was done. The other three were still in it.
She sent the flower beasts to sweep and finish, then move to support.
She stood on a new flyer, Camilla asleep behind her, head down, stowing beast crystals. That was when she heard it.
“Gillian, help me.”
Her head snapped up. A familiar body hit the ground, a parasite locked on his leg.
He swung, missed, and the parasite bit into his throat and dragged him off.
