The longer the blood skin held Gillian, the harder it got to breathe. Thin red tendrils, like veins, had sprouted from it and burrowed into her skin, pulling blood in steady draws.

Then she heard Merrick’s voice calling from above the hole.

“Gillian,” he shouted.

He’d found the wrecked flyers, the blood trail, and followed it to the pit. The taint concentration here matched an S-class taint core, and the blood drops at the edge of the black mouth hit him like a punch

Gillian heard Lily and Ruby jump in and knew the trap was set for Merrick, which meant the girls were m less danger.

He was about to jump when something in his chest moved. The Blazewing Solis inside his primal core stirred.

He pressed a hand to his heart and his head snapped up. If his primal core was reacting, Gillian had to be close, maybe even close enough to see him.

“Commander Cole, look.” Freya’s voice cut through as she pointed at the Blue Phoenix feed, her voice rising with excitement. “Lily and Ruby found her.”

The display showed Gillian lying unconscious.

Merrick asked, “Captain Reed, how deep are they?”

“About fifty feet down already. She’s okay. Thank god.”

Merrick fired off messages to both of them. Their faces flickered as they read the words.

“The Gillian in the cave is fake. She’s outside the core bond’s range. Someone hid her nearby.”

Elara caught the thread instantly. Merrick had asked how deep the hole was, and she knew he and Gillian shared a core bond. Within ten feet, triggering it sent a pulse the other couldn’t miss. The fake was way past that.

Gillian tipped him off. She’s close. She’s watching us right now.

Freya wasn’t stupid. What Elara figured, she figured.

Both of them let the shock flicker across their faces for half a second, then locked it down and stared at the fake Gillian on the display.

This thing conned Gillian first. Now it’s trying to run the same game on us.

“Lily, Ruby, pull her up quick!” Elara shouted, her voice heavy with frantic worry-every bit of it an act. “She fell that far, she must be hurt. Be careful with her. Please, be careful.”

Freya ground her nails into her palm.

They’re pissing on our heads and telling us it’s raining. Where the hell is my sister?

These things want to play? Fine. None of them are walking away.

Merrick worked the area, stepping left and right and tracking the core bond’s pull one step at a time. His foot stopped, and his eyes locked onto a pile of scale parasite corpses.

In the dark, Gillian felt the black griffin inside her primal core stir. It moved, and the force behind it grew and her body sagged with relief.

Merrick had answered her. He was closing in. She’d actually pulled it off.

She’d tried shoving her own psionic power before, but everything inside her had gone sluggish and dead Only the core bond held something that wasn’t hers.

She’d pushed at the black griffin over and over and gotten nothing, with no clue she was poking the Blazewing Solis inside Merrick instead.

“Why would there be scale parasites here?” Merrick’s voice came from somewhere close. “This isn’t a combat zone.”

Gillian heard him and nearly broke. But the blood skin cinched tighter and crushed the air out of her, and the world went black.
