“Why are you kneeling? You look so pitiful down there. Anyone walking in would think I was bullying you. Get up.”
Gillian smiled and stepped lightly aside to dodge the bow altogether.
Sylas and the rest of the medics ducked their heads even lower while keeping their spines ramrod straight.
Sylas answered with grave sincerity. “Captain Sterling would never bully us.”
Her wrist terminal pinged.
Gillian glanced down at the message that had just landed.
It came from George.
“Sylas Moore is a level 6 beastman, equal in strength to me. He has been recovering with the medical team for personal reasons. The Sovereign Guard has issued an order. Until the healing alloy crisis is over, he is responsible for your safety.”
Gillian had been waiting on George to come through, and after reading the message, her smile picked up a touch of real warmth.
“Thanks, George. Don’t forget dinner at my place tonight.”
Compared to Sylas, George felt like the safer bet by a mile.
Wiping the slate clean rang false to her. If something felt off, she would rather strike first.
Tristan watched Gillian dig her heels in, and irritation crawled up his neck. Gillian was acting like she owned the place, keeping Sylas on his knees this long!
Sylas was the one afraid of her. He wasn’t. She was only throwing her weight around because George happened to be on base.
“Captain Sterling. Quite the show of authority.”
A tall figure stepped up beside Sylas, mockery flickering across his handsome face.
Tristan unfastened his cuff and lifted his arm.
The black legion jacket slid back from his fair skin, revealing the long, fair hand he was

raising for everyone to see.
He was every inch the foxkin scion, his skin fair and pampered. Even the resentment in his narrow fox eyes carried a flirty edge, almost coquettish.
“You knew the healing alloy was compromised, and you still strapped it on me in front of everyone. You think you can dodge an attempted murder charge that easily?”
A cold glint flashed through his fox eyes as he fixed his stare on her slim frame,
“Captain Sterling personally put the healing alloy on you?”
Sylas’ head snapped up. He had not expected Gillian to actually try to kill Tristan.
“That’s exactly what happened. This vile female has no business making Sylas kneel to her.”
Not totally hopeless, then. Gillian let out a quiet laugh. So he knew it was her handiwork.
What was this guy’s deal? Neither dog nor fox, and somehow still finding the energy to glare at her and pick fights?
Then maybe she should just put him out of his misery.
“Major Lawson, the 9th Legion runs a tight ship and never shortchanges its beastmen. Wouldn’t you agree?”
Gillian rounded the workstation and stepped right up to Tristan, squaring off without a flicker of fear.
“Naturally. Are you saying you’re ready to turn yourself in? In that case, I might let you off
1 with your life.”
Tristan had no idea what she was playing at, and he braced himself to meet her on every front.
Was she about to pull some stunt and throw herself to the floor?
Not happening. He wasn’t going to touch a single hair on her head today.
“Quick question for everyone. The S-class wrist terminal is the legion’s reward for its most loyal beastmen, correct?”
“Naturally. But I have a direct order signed by your commander. That terminal is already mine. I just haven’t collected it yet.”

Curiosity really did kill the cat. Tristan was kicking himself for getting nosy that day and wasting time on this female’s shakedown.
Now he was one step behind, by exactly one step.
Tristan had been carrying the signed order on him the whole time. He pulled it out and held

Gillian didn’t even glance at the paper. The corner of her mouth just twitched up.
“No way to tell if that paper is real. If it’s legit, why didn’t you cash it in first? Why wait until I picked up mine? My family and I were the last ones onto the transport.”
“I cash mine in whenever I feel like it. Since when is that any of your business?”
Tristan’s expression didn’t budge as he tucked the order back into his jacket.
Gillian gave a small wave of her hand, and a strand of golden psionic power pulled Sylas straight back to his feet.
Only then did she keep going.
