Chapter 33 The Veterans’ Verdict
Tristan hadn’t expected Gillian to start recording the second she stepped off the transport. Was she paranoid or what?
“That’s Freya Reed? Captain Reed?”
A gasp went up from the soldiers across the hall.
“So a knockout’s best friend really is another knockout.”
“Damn, Captain Reed’s smile is gorgeous. She’s usually all business, but turns out she’s a stunner when she laughs. Looks like she and Gillian go way back.”
“One sweet and innocent, one smoking hot. Why are both of these women already taken?”
Every veteran in the room knew Freya, the unofficial queen of the logistics division.
Plenty of beastmen carried a quiet torch for her, but word had gotten around that she was off the market. Nobody knew which lucky bastard had snagged her.
Still, as long as Freya was breathing, she could always dump the guy and start over. Any of them might still have a shot.
Next on screen, Tristan strode out of the landing zone toward Gillian and ordered her to step aside with him.
“Wow, Major Lawson really has an ego. That’s how he treats one of our clerics?”
“He even told Captain Reed to get lost? The nerve. Some parachute job, no brain at all! And he’s a major?”
“He’s a level 5 and he’s already throwing his weight around with a soldier’s family. Boys, remember the inter-legion tournament a month from now?”
Heads bent together, voices dropped low, and every face in the hall lit up.
The speaker pressed his palm to the table, murder rising in his eyes.
“Captain Sterling cleared the taint out of our systems today. Once we’re healed up, we go find him in the arena. We strip him of that major rank ourselves.”
More than a few beastmen heard that and started getting ideas.

Climbing the ranks in the 9th Legion came down to two paths.

One was earning it through service. The other was beating it out of someone in a sanctioned match.
Several members of Black Rick’s elite ten Sovereign Guard had earned their spots on raw strength.
On the screen, the footage was hitting its final act.
Gillian stood her ground and refused to trade her terminal. Tristan hit her with his mind illusion and ended up taking the worse end of it when she broke through and injured his
arm.
Next, Mabel was weeping about how a defenseless old woman and her granddaughter were being trampled on.
Gillian had been trying to dress his wound out of pure kindness when he shoved her flat to the ground and tried to rip the wrist terminal right off her arm. How could anyone be that shameless?
Everyone had been waiting for some kind of twist, since Gillian’s account had even softened the picture for Tristan. Turns out Tristan had been laughing in their faces.
“Everything in that footage backs up what Captain Sterling said. Major Lawson really thinks he can get away with anything.”
“Damn. I can’t hold it in anymore. If our lieutenant colonel hadn’t shown up when he did, would Captain Sterling have made it out at all?”
Tristan hadn’t seen it coming. The whole video had stayed locked on his face. Not a single frame caught Gillian’s expressions.
He was out of moves. His handsome face flushed red.
“Major Lawson, the nerve, dragging Captain Sterling’s name through the mud. With that footage, if I were her partner, I’d be hauling your ass into the arena!”
“Damn straight. Guys like that are an embarrassment to males everywhere!”
Plenty of senior soldiers in the hall ranked just below major. Their grade was solid, but promotion slots were hard to come by. Now an opening had just dropped into their laps.
Captain Sterling had purged the taint out of their bodies, so they were going to beat the hell out of someone for her in return.

Pinkish-white fox ears sprouted from Tristan’s head, his eyes turning ice cold. Six faint, snow-white fox tails fanned out behind him, twitching with barely contained violence.
Looking around at these meatheads hypnotized by a pretty face, Tristan was about to teach them a lesson they would never forget.
“Six tails. He’s a level 6 beastman?”
“Big deal. We’ve got plenty of level 6s in this room.”
Tristan’s taunt was exactly what they had been hoping for. Several beastmen with deadly looks on their faces started closing in around him.
Right then, a golden ribbon drifted in from somewhere unseen, wound around Tristan’s body, and locked his limbs tight.
He was trussed up cold.
Gillian wasn’t sparing Tristan a thought this time. She was already in deep, and a few more grievances on the pile changed nothing.
