Merrick’s long fingers tapped lightly on the image, right on the man’s head.

“Who is this?”

Why had Gillian sent him this photo?

“Lucian, dig up everything you can on this guy. I want his file now.”

Merrick forwarded the photo to Number One, his Sovereign Guard captain.

“Yes, sir.”

Within a minute, the intel came back.

There was barely anything on this guy. Just a few lines.

But the lines made Merrick’s face turn colder than ice.

“Felix Grayson, level 3 beastman from Goldspine City, age 25, and his hidden identity- illegitimate son of Leo Grayson. Gillian ran from his hotel the morning she stormed into the 9th Legion’s temporary base.”

“Leo Grayson’s bastard son?”

Merrick’s voice dropped to a terrifying low as he read the last line.

This was the loose end that had backed Gillian into a corner that day? Then he was going to grind Felix into pieces and feed every one of them to Leo Grayson.

A knock sounded at the door of the cleric quarters. Merrick knew it was his Sovereign Guard. He cinched the small bath towel around his waist and pulled the door open.

Number One stepped in first, head bowed in a way that wasn’t like him at all. In one hand he carried an unconscious pink-white fox.

“What’s this?”

Merrick took a long look at Number One and the fox dangling from his grip. Those pink ears could only belong to Tristan.

“Nothing to say? You dosed Tris with regression serum? He screwed up again?”

Tristan had transferred to the 9th Legion to dodge an arranged marriage his father wanted to

set up.

Only days in, and Tristan had already managed to land himself in his own brother’s grip.

Right. Number One’s real name was Lucian, Tristan’s blood brother, and he had been serving as Merrick’s Sovereign Guard captain for six years.

Seeing Merrick about to lose his temper, Numbers Two and Three slipped in fast and pulled the door shut behind them.

They handed Merrick a fresh set of clothes.

“Talk. What the hell happened.”

Merrick pulled the shirt on and worked the collar buttons closed one at a time.

How had Tristan managed to piss off Lucian?

The regression serum was no joke.

“Commander, Tris was out of line. I’ve already punished him. The serum lasts three months, so he can’t shift back to human form during that time.

“Let Tris run errands at Captain Sterling’s side. I just ask that she forgive him.”

Tristan had clashed with Gillian?

“Will someone tell me what happened?”

Merrick looked over at Lucian, but Lucian seemed unable to say a word, head bent low.

Numbers Two and Three understood exactly how Lucian felt. In his shoes, they would be just as gutted.

“Commander, let me explain. Here’s what happened.”

Number Three stepped forward and laid out the whole feud between Tristan and Gillian, fair and factual, including the fight over the S-class wrist terminal.

Merrick’s face darkened the longer he listened. In just three days, things had escalated to the point where Gillian and Tristan were ready to kill each other.

If Lucian hadn’t intervened today, one of them would have ended up dead.

With the cause and the effect laid out, Merrick fixed a heavy gaze on the small pink-white fox.

“Tristan was never this petty before. How did things get this tangled with Gillian?”

“I think Tristan misread Captain Sterling, listened to Goldspine’s smears about her, and got the wrong picture. Commander, should we deal with the Goldspine angle?” Number Three figured the 200 million coins Tristan kept ranting about was probably exactly that.

Merrick’s cold stare cranked up the pressure on Lucian.

“Commander, this is on me. I failed to keep him in line.”

Lucian set the pink-white fox down on the floor. The body lay limp, breathing barely there.

His usually icy voice carried a small tremor now.

“Captain Sterling can punish him however she wants. Just spare his life. He’s the only Lawson heir left.”

He knew Number One was trying to save Tristan.

If Merrick handled this personally, Tristan would suffer through hell.

But the thought of Tristan targeting his sweet wife, of her possibly crying about it at home tonight, lit something hot under Merrick’s skin.

Merrick was already mentally working out the best way to peel a layer off Tristan.
