Chapter 38 The Awakening

It was as if she had trained here at some point.

But one look at Gillian, all soft skin and delicate frame, and you’d never guess she had spent time on the wasteland.

For the first time in his life, Sylas found himself genuinely interested in a female.

And Sylas wasn’t the only one feeling it.

Even the seasoned medics agreed that working with Gillian was a real pleasure.

By comparison, Elara had needed three months to find her footing when she joined the 9th Legion.

Gillian, on the other hand, fit in like she had been born for this unit!

Looking at the final hall, Gillian hesitated. If she just powered through, at six seconds a patient, she was still looking at 50 minutes.

Night had already fallen, and it was past 7 PM.

She had a housewarming dinner waiting at home.

“Captain Sterling, why’d you stop? You’re not continuing?”

Sylas looked puzzled.

After thinking it over, Gillian fired off messages to Mabel, Freya, and Lieutenant Colonel Parker, and then she walked into the last medical hall.

“Let’s go. Better than dragging it out.”

Sylas nodded. This really couldn’t be delayed.

His expression turned serious as he called out to the medics behind him. “All hands ready. Last hall. Move.”

An image of Merrick flickered through Gillian’s mind. She had no idea whether he had even woken up.

Would he show up for dinner tonight?

Chapter 38 The Awakening

Back in the cleric quarters, the room sat quiet.

Merrick opened his eyes and realized he was lying in Gillian’s bed.

The room was empty except for him.

At this hour, Gillian must have gone to the medical team.

Merrick pushed himself upright with one hand and rubbed the back of his neck with the other. The muscles there ached deep.

He must have slept a long time.

But he hadn’t slept this soundly in years.

If he remembered right, Gillian had been the one to knock him out at the end.

Hmph. He pictured his sweet, fragile little Gillian and wondered if she had hurt her hand swinging at him.

The wide motion he had just made sent the thin blanket sliding off his waist.

His bare chest looked smooth and flushed with health, nothing like a body that had been gravely wounded.

He reached down to touch the place where the injury had been, and surprise flickered through his eyes.

“It’s already healed?”

Pinpoints of starlight settled into his cold eyes. Had Gillian healed him?

Merrick swung out of bed and worked through his arms and legs. He felt strong enough to drop a bull in one punch.

His little wife really was something.

Every beastman in Wasteland City knew how good it felt to have a cleric who could purify the taint at your side.

And bonded to a cleric with a dual-property gift, no less.

If he was being honest, he hadn’t just started thinking about Gillian yesterday or the day before.

Chapter 38 The Awakening

Going back to the beginning, it had been a very long time.

She had come into his hands a different way this time around, but the point was, he had finally pulled her in.

A small bathrobe was wrapped around him, barely covering his backside.

Merrick opened his wrist terminal and signaled his Sovereign Guard to bring his clothes

over.

He had a little time today. He could spend some of it with Gillian.

But the moment he opened the terminal, he realized his blocked StarNet feed had never been switched back on.

The instant he reactivated it, messages came pouring in nonstop.

If his wrist terminal hadn’t been top-of-the-line, it probably would have crashed into a blue

screen.

What he found when he started reading made his jaw tighten.

Ever since they had signed the military marriage license, his accounts had been synced with Gillian’s.

Roughly 180 million in coins had been added to the balance.

And his name now sat on twelve remote mountains on the outskirts of Wasteland City, plus a huge stretch of surrounding land.

Had Gillian bought all of that?

Merrick’s instincts pricked. Something felt off.

Wasteland City was a dump, sure, but twelve mountains and that much land still ran at least 20 million coins.

He knew Gillian better than anyone. He could account for every coin in her little nest egg, so where had nearly 200 million come from?

Merrick switched over to his messages.

Two messages from Gillian sat unread. The most recent one had come in that morning.

A trace of softness crossed his cool face. What had she sent him?
