The motion was smooth as flowing water, and the scalpel landed cleanly in Sylas’ palm.
The only sign of the movement was a faint ripple at the hem of his white uniform
“Fine.”
With the blade out of reach, Gillian shifted her eyes away in mild disappointment. Using psionic power to neuter someone would have felt weird anyway.
She wiped the blood off her hands with quick, practiced strokes.
“By the sound of it, are Lucian and Tristan not even from the same mother?”
Who could resist a piece of juicy gossip right at the end of a shift?
Looking at the two of them, they really didn’t resemble each other.
“Captain Sterling.”
Sylas adjusted the glasses on the bridge of his nose.
“Curiosity about everything will only get you hurt.”
Gillian had no comeback for that.
“Captain Sterling, I’m sorry, but Lucian’s personal affairs aren’t mine to share.”
When she looked like she might press further, Sylas turned away and set the scalpel into the sterilization tray with a sharp metallic clink.
Even with his back to her, Gillian could picture the look on his face.
“With Black Rick standing as the go-between, the thing with you and Tristan should be put to rest. Pushing this further isn’t going to do you any favors.”
“I’ve got my own thoughts on that, but thanks for the advice…”
Gillian dropped the towel into the recycling bin.
Right at that moment, her stomach decided to growl loudly into the silence.
Right. Once Gillian got into a task, she always forgot her stomach was running on empty. She

was hungry enough to take down an entire hog.

She watched the steady rise and fall of Tristan’s chest, where the healing alloy had been packed in.
Gillian lowered her lashes, hiding the flicker of killing intent behind them.
Burning his primal core to climb back to level 6 was going to put him through hell. Crazy fox, we’ll see who comes out on top.
A small laugh slipped out of her, and her smile turned even sweeter. She tapped a finger on top of the metal case. “Come on, sweetie. Let’s go find your brother.”
She tucked the fox back into the metal case, ready to deliver him to Lucian in person.
“Captain Sterling, where are you taking him?”
Sylas stepped in front of her on instinct.
“Relax. I’m not going to do anything to him.”
Gillian was waiting on the Lawson family’s one billion coins to clear, and the question of Tristan serving her could just as easily be settled with more money.
She had no interest in sleeping with one eye open every night.
“Job’s done. Time to collect the bag and grab dinner. What, you’ve been on your feet all day and you’re not even hungry?”
Sylas reasoned that as long as she wasn’t actually planning to neuter Tristan, he could live with it.
Sylas stepped aside and followed silently behind her, watching her retreating back. Outside the medical vehicle, a much larger grip-buggy had pulled up alongside. Gillian pushed the door open and looked up to find Merrick already seated inside it.
The two buttons at his chest had been refastened, and his legion uniform sat smooth and squared away.
The light inside the cabin was low, leaving half his face cast in shadow.
The other half catching the screen of his wrist terminal looked tight and drawn. Whatever message he was reading clearly wasn’t good news, and he gave off a chill that warned people

to keep their distance.

The grip-buggy’s cabin was spacious enough that even his tall frame could sit in the back seat without cramping those long legs.
Gillian looked away and noticed that several Sovereign Guards had formed a perimeter around the buggy, watching over Merrick in silence.
Sylas saw Gillian frozen in place, as if she were afraid to step out.
Remembering how red her eyes had been when she’d shown up to save Tristan, he assumed she was afraid of Merrick.
He spoke gently to put her at ease. “Captain Sterling, don’t worry. Black Rick is actually a good guy. He won’t push you around.”
Gillian was a little caught off guard. She’d had Sylas pegged as the type to stay out of everyone’s business, and she hadn’t expected him to comfort her.
“Thanks, Captain Moore.”
It wasn’t that she was scared of Merrick. She was just a little embarrassed.
She wasn’t sure if it was the pregnancy, but lately she’d been hit with random waves of emotion, and when Merrick had seen her cry just now, he’d…
The memory of what had happened in the car earlier sent heat rising to her face.
The moment Gillian stepped out, Lucian moved quickly to meet her, his eyes immediately going to the metal case in her arms.
A rare hint of tension flashed across his usually unreadable face.
“Ma’am, is Tris…”
“He’s fine. Don’t forget to transfer the money. Here, take him.”
Gillian stepped down from the medical vehicle.
