Chapter 48 Going Home

Chapter 48 Going Home

“I’ve got you. You’re not falling, my cleric. We’re heading home.”

“You mean my home.”

“Mm. Our home.”

Merrick’s voice was unbearably gentle, like the first sun melting fresh snow.

It crept in everywhere, silent and unstoppable.

It settled deep into her heart.

It left her nowhere to hide.

“What’s wrong, Gillian?”

The Merrick in front of her had absolutely nothing in common with the Black Rick she’d pictured in her head.

The way he looked at her, like the two of them being together was the most natural thing in the world, made it impossible for her to stay angry. He really did consider her his wife.

All she could do was look away from the gaze that felt hot enough to melt her on the spot.

“Are you driving or what? I’m starving.”

Catching the irritation in her voice, Merrick leaned in close and murmured, “Just a second… we’ll go.”

Gillian watched his face fill her vision, and her stomach gave a small flip.

What was he about to do?

“Gillian, you seem scared of me.”

“Who said that? I’m not… why would I be scared of you?”

“Not scared, huh? Then what’s with the way you’re clutching your stomach?”

Merrick studied the flat plane of her abdomen with open suspicion.

A jolt ran through her. Now that she knew who Merrick really was, telling him about the

babies had become complicated. She was afraid he’d try to take them from her one day.

Gillian let her hands fall, tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, and changed the subject. “I’m just hungry.”

“Is that all it is?”

Worried he’d start putting pieces together, Gillian decided to go on the offensive.

“Commander Cole, as one of your soldiers, I’ve been running on empty all afternoon. I literally treated 5,000 of your beastmen today. Are you really going to keep working me to the bone?”

The faint edge of anger in her voice startled a laugh out of Merrick.

Maybe he had pushed her a bit hard today. He’d make it up to her tonight.

Merrick quickly clicked her seatbelt into place and pulled back.

He wanted to kiss his little bunny, just not here.

Gillian couldn’t believe she’d let herself get that close to giving in to his looks just now.

She did feel something real for Merrick, but she preferred to take this slower.

The moment Merrick shut the car door behind him, Gillian felt her lungs come back online.

She straightened up in the seat, and to cover the jolt in her chest, she stuck her head halfway out the window and called over to Lucian.

“Lucian, you can keep your meatball fox. Feeding him would cost a fortune. Don’t ship him

over…”

Her face all but had ‘don’t even try to dump him on me’ written across it.

Lucian was a man of principle. If he’d promised her three months of Tristan’s service, he wasn’t about to walk it back. If she didn’t want to cover his food, he’d send Tris over with his own meals.

“I get the picture, ma’am. I’ll have everything delivered to your place tomorrow.”

Gillian smiled, satisfied. He really did know how to play ball. A few extra perks weren’t a bad

bonus.

For once, Lucian let himself smile. Tris needed someone to take the edge off his attitude, and

Gillian was just the person to do it. Otherwise the kid would never be fit to carry the Lawson

name.

Merrick gestured for Lucian, Number Two, and Number Three to climb in. They were all going to dinner together.

Then he turned and clapped a hand on Sylas’ shoulder. Sylas had been silent the whole time,

After Sylas had stepped down from the Sovereign Guard, Merrick had refused to replace him. The moment Sylas got his genetic condition fixed, the spot would be his again.

“Come grab dinner with us, Sylas. It’s been too long.”

Sylas hadn’t fully recovered from what he’d just witnessed, and his head felt like it had taken a brick.

What had he just seen? Merrick, scooping Gillian off the ground in one smooth motion the second she’d griped at him.

The same face that had ordered countless men to their deaths had softened with something so tender it could have drowned a person.

He had never seen this human a version of Merrick before.

So Gillian had been bonded to Merrick all this time.

That explained why a hardass like George Parker treated her like a treasure. She wasn’t just a cleric. She was Merrick’s wife.

Suddenly everything clicked into place.

“Yes.”

Sylas nodded with respect.

For reasons he couldn’t fully explain, he found he couldn’t quite bring himself to look at Merrick anymore, and he shifted his eyes away as if pulling back to safe ground.
