Chapter 74 Fighting Poison With Poison
Tristan hit the floor with a soft thump.

He rolled once across the floor before settling. By then Gillian already had the metal case in her hands
Golden psionic power pried the case open, revealing rows of metal vials filled with collected faint, lined up neatly inside.
The contents were ink-black, dense, and pure.
A quick count put the total at well over 100.
“Nice work. Thanks.”
Every vial was peak-purity taint. Gillian gave the lot a once-over and nodded with satisfaction.
“You’re welcome, Captain Sterling. I know Black Rick signed off on these for you, but I have to remind you Handle every vial with extreme care. Each use needs a full report uploaded to the legion.”
“Thanks for the heads up.”
“Speaking of, this little guy’s got quite the temper.”
The guard managed a still-shaken laugh. “Captain Sterling, this dog of yours has a serious attitude problem. I could take him to the legion K-9 unit. Three days with the pros and I guarantee he’ll be sweet as a kid.”
Gillian had forgotten the guard didn’t know who Tristan was. For secrecy, Merrick had quietly placed all 5,000 soldiers treated the previous day under tight watch.
Not a whisper of what happened in the medical hall had leaked out.
The guard’s well-meaning advice landed on Tristan like a slap.
“You wanna die?!”
Tristan fixed the guard with a cold stare, spoke in human words, flashed his claws, and launched at the man’s throat.
Gillian’s golden gauze swept out and wrapped the fox up again.
“He’s not a dog. He’s a friend of mine who’s having a little trouble shifting. Thanks though, go ahead and get back to work.”
The thing was straining with everything he had, fighting toward the door. Tristan was about ready to lose
his mind!
“Huh? Sorry, sorry, I just figured he was your pet, Captain Sterling. That haircut, uh, kind of suits him actually.

Once the guard pushed out that stiff compliment, he hightailed it out of there.

Tristan was still mad enough to chomp the guard to death, but Gillian had already used her wrist terminal to slide the door shut, cutting off the prying stares from outside.
“Let go of me! He just insulted me, a damn soldier insulting his superior officer!”
Tristan thrashed hard against the binding.
“Tris, calm down. The guy has no idea you’re a major. Instead of stewing about it, you should focus on getting your primal core back up to grade.”
“Nope, I’m going out there to kill him right now!”
“Sure about that? Looking the way you do?”
Tristan went still, as if her words had punched a hole straight through him.
Gillian gave a small smile. “Hold tight. I’ll get you a beast crystal. Once you eat it, at least the fur grows back quickly.”
“For real?”
“Mhm.”
“Hmph.”
Tristan reined in the killing urge running through his head, but instead of crawling back into the metal box this time, he climbed onto Gillian’s seat and settled in.
His paws crossed neatly, his chin perched on top of them in a sorry little display.
His expression was full of grief. “That guy insulted me. I am not a dog.”
Just wait. They were all going to pay for that.
Gillian could only play along. “Mhm, you’re absolutely right. He was way out of line.”
Aiden fixed Gillian with a serious look. “Ms. Sterling, what are you planning to do with that high- concentration taint?”
Yikes. The color alone was dark enough to make his chest tighten.
Gillian flashed a sweet smile.
“It’s for the treatment. Ever heard of fighting fire with fire?”
Tristan and Aiden’s eyes landed on Gillian’s hand at the same time.
Neither one of them had.

A small pop broke the quiet.
Gillian peeled the vial cap off.
Without wasting another word, she wrapped her psionic power around the ink-dark taint source.
