“Commander, this trip to Goldspine, is it about settling the score for the lady?”

It was Number Three who had uncovered what Felix had nearly done to Gillian. So of course he knew exactly who Felix was.
That punk had the nerve to come after the commander’s wife?
As far as paying Felix back went, the whole team was behind Merrick.
“Of course not. You’ve known me long enough. You think I mix work and personal?”
Number Two made a knowing sound and aimed his wrist terminal like he was about to start a recording “Alright, commander. Interview time. Are you into the lady or not? If you’re not, better say so now. Don’t go wasting her time.”
He kept his eyes locked on Merrick, a wicked grin barely held back.
“Your genetic defect is showing. Keep yapping and I’ll have your mouth sewn shut.”
Merrick leaned back in his chair with calm authority, his dark gaze sending a chill straight down Number Two’s spine.
“Fair warning. Anyone thinking about going after Gillian, I’ll personally drop them at Winterhush House on Gourmaw Road. Elowen has been eyeing all of you for ages. She would pay a fortune for one dinner.”
Number Two’s face went green. Elowen was the owner of Winterhush House, and she liked to get her hands on any male unlucky enough to walk in.
Everyone in the Sovereign Guard had a high price tag on them. Anyone delivered to her doorstep meant a tidy payout in coins.
Number Two folded fast and tucked his wrist terminal away, plastering on a sincere smile. “Commander. I was kidding. Obviously you love the lady more than anything.”
“Better be.”
Merrick rolled a bio-armor button between his index finger and thumb, his attention elsewhere.
His legion jacket was buttoned all the way to the very top, the line of his collar crisp and severe.
Every gesture carried the kind of cold elegance you couldn’t fake.
A handful of healing alloy pieces sat on the tray in front of him. His eyes circled them, growing colder with each pass.
Something about them was off.
One spot on the bio-armor button was ruined, with a small hole punched through it like something had bitten clean through.

A flicker of weariness crossed his face. Merrick crossed his long legs and let his gaze drift back to the terminal, waiting.
“Told you your terminal’s fine. The lady just got off shift. You know how slammed the medical team has been.”
Lucian had his arms folded and a cold expression on his face, though a faint, almost invisible glint of mockery sat in his eyes.
Number Two had to admire it. Lucian had guts.
Number Three thought to himself that Lucian had the biggest tab of any of them. He had nothing left o fear.
“Lucian, has anyone told you you’re cutest when you keep your mouth shut?”
A soft hum buzzed from the terminal.
A message had landed.
The second Merrick saw it was from Gillian, his hand went still. The button he had been turning between his fingers got tossed back onto the metal tray.
He straightened in his seat fast, leaning slightly forward, instantly alert and locked in.
Number Two couldn’t help craning his neck for a look. “Commander, that really from the lady?”
Number Three gave a discreet little cough, smiling with his eyes. “Number Two. The genetic defect’s showing.”
Merrick didn’t spare a thought for the mockery from his men. His long, defined fingers slid across the screen and tapped the message open.
“Thank you. Did you handle the blood-stained robe in the bathroom? The flowers on the table are beautiful. So are the clothes in the closet.”
Merrick rattled off a quick string of taps and sent his reply.
He looked up at Number Three.
“Track down the maker of our bio-armor for me. And find the facility in Goldspine that produces the healing alloy. While you’re at it, get me Leo Grayson too. I’m settling accounts today.”
Merrick was not a man used to taking a loss.
And he was not about to swallow this one.
As one location and one name after another came down the list, the loose mood in the room shifted, and every face turned hard.
Merrick was here for blood.

It was time to start swinging.
“Commander, tracking these guys down should be a walk in the park.”

But the further Number Three got into the search, the more his smile drained away into something serious.
