Chapter 80 Sweet as a Melon
Chapter 80 Sweet as a Melon
“You think Lance is the only male I’ve broken? Just because he likes me doesn’t mean I have to like him back. There aren’t enough pieces of me to go around.”
Freya must have been there a while already. The logistics females around her had pretty much finished their meals and were on their way to return the trays.
In a heartbeat, half the long table emptied out.
“Oh, oh. So do you like Captain Lawson?”
Gillian took a bite of vegetable, and for some reason, the greens had a faint earthy taste under the seasoning.
Back in Goldspine City, the same cabbage would have come through with a sweet, clean flavor.
Freya gave a self-deprecating little laugh. “Gillian, what are you even saying? He’s the captain of the Sovereign Guard. A guy like that doesn’t look twice at me.”
There wasn’t anyone on either side of them right now, but the noise of the mess hall would have buried the conversation anyway.
That couldn’t be right, though. “Didn’t he drive you home last night?”
“Drove me home, sure. He had the patrol pick up both our buggies, but he didn’t say a single word the whole way. I was planning to chat with him, and then I turned my head and his buggy was already pulling away.”
Listening to her, Gillian got the feeling Lucian would never land Freya in a hundred years.
Freya gave an easy little laugh, her gorgeous face heavy with thoughts she wasn’t sharing. “Quit teasing the older girl. Just eat. Look at you, skin and bones already.”
She didn’t see him that way, and he didn’t see her that way. Fair enough.
Lucian didn’t like her. She wasn’t about to hold a blade to anyone’s throat and demand he change his mind.
Freya wasn’t actually heartbroken. The legion had a hundred thousand beastmen. Plenty of them just as handsome as Lucian. Hmph. There was no shortage of guys lining up for her.
She pivoted the topic fast. “I saw the medics packing up trays again. Medical hall must have been a madhouse today.”
Catching the concern in Freya’s voice, Gillian swallowed her bite before answering. “It was fine. I just didn’t expect there to be that many patients.”
Gillian was a fast eater, and Freya was a little worried she’d choke. “Slow down.”
“Have you eaten yet, Freya?”

“Mhm. If I weren’t waiting on you, I’d already be gone.”
Gillian ate even faster after that, wiping her mouth clean once the food was gone.
“Can we go talk somewhere? I’ve got ten minutes.”
“I know a spot. Come on.”

Freya picked up the watermelon plate, took Gillian by the hand, and led her to the mess hall storeroom, She tapped her wrist terminal to unlock the door.
“I just dropped off the vegetables and meat for the day. Nobody comes in here. So what do you want to
ask?”
“Freya, why was I matched with Merrick?”
Freya had known the question was coming.
She found a metal crate, pulled Gillian down beside her, and popped a piece of watermelon into Gillian’s mouth.
“You know why we’re stationed in Goldspine City?”
“Recruitment?”
“Nope. Recruitment wrapped up a month ago.”
“For the healing alloy?”
“Smart girl. The day you walked in like that, I knew you were in trouble. I matched you strictly by protocol. How his data got into the system, no idea. If he had used Black Rick as his alias, you never would have matched.”
“Why? Because I’m just a regular person?”
Gillian couldn’t quite work it out. If everything had gone through normal channels, why had George and Freya both looked like they had swallowed something rotten?
George and Freya genuinely liked her. That wasn’t an act.
“Is it because of Elara?”
Freya watched the sweet face of Gillian work through how to put it, and then heard Elara’s name come up.
“You could say it has something to do with her.”
The watermelon Freya had been feeding her was really sweet.
The juice burst across her teeth, and her eyes drifted half-shut in quiet contentment.
“Freya, are Elara and Merrick a couple?”

Chapter SO Sweet as a Melon
Freya’s face went into a question mark. Who and who? Black Rick and Elara? What was rattling around in that head of Gillian’s?
