Chapter 79 Mess Hall Friends

“Sure, thanks.” Gillian climbed onto the grip-buggy without hesitating.

Yesterday George had brought her food, and now that she was going to eat on her own, she hadn’t realized the mess hall sat so far away.

“Captain Sterling, anytime you’re hungry, just put the word out on StarNet. A few of us are always heading out to grab everyone’s food, or if you’d rather come yourself, the grip-buggy will swing by and pick you up.”

The medic driving the buggy was on the younger side, and saying it had him going a little shy. He could hardly bring himself to look at her.

Gillian nodded. The idea of a free ride was news to her. “That would be a huge help. Thanks.”

Three more medics in white sat in the buggy, all of them too shy to look at her directly. Every one of them was dying to know how she had cured the scaling. The medical team had blown up over it that morning.

They asked their questions quietly, and Gillian didn’t hide anything. She just kept the exact technique to herself.

She told them the taint pushed some soldiers into scaling, which eventually turned into a new parasite. Kill the parasite, and the disease was gone for good.

By the time Gillian reached the mess hall, only five minutes had passed. On foot it would have been more like twenty.

“Thanks again for the ride.”

Gillian hopped off the buggy with a bright smile and waved to the medics still on board.

The case she had just shared had them hanging on every word.

July weather had a real bite to it, and a buggy run for meals usually came with a side of grumbling.

But today, every one of them felt like those five minutes had flown by.

“Captain Sterling, we’re gonna grab our food. If you want a ride back, meet at the buggy in 20 minutes.”

Jared called after her in a hurry as she walked away.

Their driver, she had learned, was named Jared Hayes. He was a black bear beastman with the kind of easy, dimpled smile that made him look downright wholesome.

“Got it. Thanks.”

Gillian glanced back with a smile and set a reminder on her wrist terminal to head out and meet them in 20 minutes.

As Gillian disappeared into the mess hall, the medics in the buggy felt a quiet wave of regret.

Chapter 79 Mess Hall Friends

“Didn’t expect Captain Sterling to be that down to earth. Guess we had her pegged wrong.”

“She’s not like those other clerics from the Capital Planet. Captain Sterling is her own person. She’s a good one.”

Jared had been watching her for a long time. She didn’t just treat them well. She treated every soldier coming in for help the exact same way. A cleric like that was hard to come by.

Yesterday she had seemed so fierce that they had written her off as one of those impossible clerics from before.

Now they were all kicking themselves over it.

“We were so rude to a sweet female. That’s ugly behavior.”

“Nobody knew, but from here on out we treat Captain Sterling right. She’s still just a young woman. Come on, let’s go grab some food.”

Gillian had no idea what they were saying about her outside. The moment she walked into the mess hall, she spotted Freya.

A woman as striking as Freya turned heads just by sitting still.

The lunch rush meant the place was packed. Most of the females at her table were from logistics, and a single male was off to one side, cutting up a piece of fruit for her.

“Frey, try this. The melon’s super sweet.”

Freya didn’t have much appetite, and whatever she said to Lance made the handsome beastman’s brow knit together.

Right then, Freya caught sight of Gillian, rose from her seat, and waved her over.

Gillian made a quick stop at the food window for a pre-set meal tray and headed for Freya.

“Freya.”

“Gillian.” Freya raised a hand at the male beside her, waving him off.

The handsome beastman stood up with visible reluctance, gave up his seat to Gillian, and pointed at the fruit on the table with a wounded look. “Frey, try it. I got it just for you.”

Freya immediately opened her wrist terminal and transferred coins his way, intent on not owing him anything. “Thanks, Lance. The melon looks really sweet.”

The beastman named Lance walked off looking pleased, only to spot the transfer notification on his terminal a few steps later. His face turned several shades paler.

When he looked back. Freya already had her head down, chatting and laughing with the medic in white who had just sat across from her.
