The moon was bright, and the stars were sparse.

Cars zoomed back and forth along the road.

Jules was jogging, panting heavily.

He stopped for the tenth time and roared in annoyance, "I want to take a cab!"

Running was too exhausting. He felt like his entire body was falling apart.

Clara kicked him in the ass and said coldly, "Two more miles. Keep going."

She jogged steadily ahead, her breathing even and her steps light.

Jules resigned himself to his fate and dragged his feet behind her.

Without looking back, Clara instructed, "Inhale through your nose, exhale through your mouth. Take deep breaths."

Jules slowly adjusted his breathing.

Perhaps because he was using the right technique, he gradually stopped panting so desperately.

He started feeling the wind brush past his ears and watching the traffic blur by. He even found himself with enough mental space to observe the pedestrians on the sidewalk.

While running, his mind felt completely empty, as if he didn't need to think about anything, and as if he wasn't thinking about anything at all.

He simply followed the petite figure ahead of him, taking it one step at a time.

Suddenly, a childhood memory surfaced. He and his older brother were incredibly mischievous. Whenever they played together, they would sprint as fast as they could, leaving their sister far behind.

Their mother always dressed Clara in nice leather shoes, but running in those hurt her feet. So, she would secretly take off her shoes and chase after them barefoot.

But since she was a girl, she could never catch up to the boys. Once, they made her so mad she cried and went back to tattle to their parents.

Thinking about those childhood days brought a faint smile to Jules's face.

But the smile quickly vanished.

He watched Clara jogging effortlessly a few paces ahead, her breathing completely undisturbed.

She had been so weak when they were kids.

Six years later, she had become terrifyingly strong.
