"Aren't you terrified of her too, Jules?" Ethan blinked innocently. "You've never sat quietly in the living room doing absolutely nothing before."
Jules choked on his rage.
He wasn't scared; he just knew real men didn't fight with women.
Besides, he had entrance exams coming up anyway, so cramming at the last minute wasn't the worst idea.
He flipped open his literature textbook and picked a simple poem, only to realize he didn't recognize five or six of the characters. He opened his French book and had no idea how to pronounce any of the vocabulary words. Defeated, he opened his math book, which nearly gave him a breakdown—he couldn't make heads or tails of the formulas.
In that moment, he felt completely illiterate.
Clara was upstairs taking a shower.
She had run at least six miles today, and her sports bra was soaked with sweat.
After a refreshing shower, she was just about to get dressed when she suddenly heard a rustling sound outside.
Her heightened hearing skill didn't just make her ears sharper; it allowed her to effortlessly identify the exact nature of the sounds.
It sounded like the faint rustling of fabric rubbing against itself.
The Lambert estate had many servants who often swept leaves in the yard, so Clara initially brushed it off.
But soon, she heard hushed voices.
It wasn't English, and it wasn't French... It sounded more like Arabic.
Her old French teacher knew Arabic and would occasionally show off a few phrases in class. She could recognize the language, but she had no idea what the people outside were saying.
Clara's eyes sharpened.
It seemed someone had snuck into the Lambert estate.
She dressed rapidly as the Arabic outside grew denser and faster... Like a parrot mimicking words, she memorized the entire conversation verbatim.
