That evening, in the study hall.
Clara noticed that Chase looked unusually exhausted.
"My uncle practically tortured me to death yesterday..." Chase was slumped over his desk, entirely devoid of his usual aristocratic elegance. He mumbled weakly, "Theodore is a total psycho. He started his own company and insisted on making me his personal assistant."
Clara asked casually, "Why did he suddenly disappear the night before last?"
Chase froze.
His uncle's condition was the Yardley family's deepest secret.
Avoiding Clara's gaze, he offered a stiff excuse. "He hasn't been in Springfield for very long. He just went out in the middle of the night and got lost."
Seeing how he dodged her eyes, Clara immediately knew he was lying.
However, she had no interest in prying into other people's private matters.
She opened her notebook. "I ran into two new types of questions last night. Walk me through the solving techniques..."
The evening study hall flew by in a flash.
Clara felt like every single minute was incredibly productive, and that sense of progress gave her a deep feeling of peace.
She packed her textbooks, slung her backpack over her shoulder, and walked out of the school gates.
The Lambert family car was parked down the alley to the left. Just as she was walking toward it, a man in a sharp black suit suddenly blocked her path.
"Miss Lambert, my boss would like to see you."
Clara looked up. The man had an ice-cold expression and visibly thick muscles straining against his sleeves; it was obvious he was highly trained in combat.
He held an arm out to block her way, clearly intending to drag her into the car by force if she refused to cooperate.
"Just because your boss wants to see me means I have to go?" She offered a cold, mocking smile. "It's getting late. I have to go home and do my homework."
She stepped around him to leave.
