Before she even stepped into the classroom, she heard Serena's trademark sweet, gentle voice.
"At the end of this month, which is this Sunday, the Lamberts are hosting a massive banquet. I'd love for all of you to come."
Lillian and her clique eagerly chimed in.
"Wow, if the Lamberts are hosting a party, it's going to be incredibly glamorous."
"Thanks for the invite, Serena! I need to start looking for a gown right away."
"The Lamberts are one of the most prominent families in Springfield. There's going to be so many wealthy people there, right?"
The girls clustered together, gossiping with extreme enthusiasm.
Clara walked in calmly.
Serena's face immediately contorted into a mask of guilt. "I'm so sorry, Clara. I invited our classmates to the banquet without asking you first. You aren't mad, are you?"
Lillian scoffed. "You're the second daughter of the Lambert family. Why shouldn't you be allowed to invite people to your own home?"
"But this banquet was arranged specifically to welcome Clara back to Springfield," Serena explained softly. "On the night of the party, I'll just be in the background. Clara is the true star."
Lillian sighed. "Serena, you're just too kind. How did I get so lucky to have such a sweet friend?"
Clara almost laughed out loud.
That was the biggest insult to the word 'sweet' she had ever heard.
She didn't even want to waste a single word on Serena and walked straight to her desk.
Serena followed her, looking deeply wronged. "Clara, are you angry with me? I'm so sorry, I shouldn't have invited them without your permission... Or do you just not want anyone from our class at your welcome banquet?"
Clara twirled her pen.
She hadn't wanted to drag anyone from Class One into the Lambert family's mess.
But it was glaringly obvious that Serena wanted the entire class there to watch her make a fool of herself.
