Lillian thought her ears were playing tricks on her.
But Clara was already holding the emerald dress up against her frame to check the fit.
Disbelief washed over her, and her face flushed bright red with excitement.
If she wore a masterpiece like this, she would immediately outshine everyone in the room—including Serena.
Although she was Serena's best friend, she had always secretly harbored resentment toward her.
Serena was prettier, had a better figure, and always reduced her to nothing more than a frumpy sidekick.
With this dress, she would finally be the beautiful one.
Lillian's hands trembled with anticipation.
Then, she realized she was still clutching a small paper packet in her palm.
Serena had discreetly slipped it to her earlier.
Her instructions were to empty the powder into Clara's drink when she wasn't looking.
It was a heavy dose of laxatives. If Clara drank it, she would be rushing to the bathroom all night. Losing control of her bowels at her own banquet would be social suicide.
But now, Lillian hesitated.
Clara was graciously lending her an unimaginably expensive gown. Poisoning her felt a bit... ungrateful.
But then she remembered the humiliating beatdown Clara had given her at school.
Clara had shoved her head into a dirty sink, forcing her to swallow filthy water. The entire school knew about it, and she had been too ashamed to show her face ever since.
Clara embarrassed her, so she would embarrass Clara. It was only fair.
After rationalizing it to herself, Lillian finally uncorked the packet and poured it into Clara's glass of water. However, her hand paused, and she only emptied half the contents before throwing the rest in the trash.
She would soon realize that this tiny shred of lingering guilt was the only thing that saved her from total ruin.
