I joined them for breakfast, knowing there was no point in hiding anyway. Alpha Zane acknowledged me with a simple nod, his whole attention fixed on Kael whose expression was back to being cold and unreadable.

He sat down at the table, a small frown formed on his lips as he nodded at something Alpha Zane said.

I pulled my seat beside Kael, and he didn’t even spare me a glance. Mother’s piercing gaze followed my every move and it felt so fucking annoying.

She didn’t even greet me or anything, and yet, she wouldn’t stop glaring at me.

“I heard you won a few games while we were away,” Alpha Zane said between mouthfuls. “I hope your grade is still intact?”

Kael nodded. “Of course, my grades are perfect. You have nothing to be worried about.”

Alpha Zane looked impressed by his response. I took a peek at his injured hand, only to see it had now formed a bluish discoloration. It didn’t seem to hurt as he moved the hand though, or maybe he was just used to hiding his pain.

“I’ve spoken to your trainer about your coming of age,” Alpha Zame continued and I didn’t miss the way Kael stiffened beside

People always looked forward to that day, but with Kael it’s difficult to know what was going through his mind.

“It will be held during the next full moon, so I gave him your schedule so he could know how to make plans. Whatever training you have to do shouldn’t affect your games and studies, right?”

“Of course.”

Since I joined the table, Kael hasn’t said more than two words. ‘Of course,’ ‘no problem,’ and I was starting to think he was just agreeing to whatever his father was saying.

I dished my food quietly, but I couldn’t even eat because everything I did was being watched closely by my mother. She kept staring at me as if she was waiting for me to make a mistake so that she could give me an earful, and I suddenly lost my appetite.

I took a sip of water, patiently waiting for Alpha Zane to stand up so that I could leave without coming off as rude. After what felt like forever, he shifted his gaze away from Kael and turned me.

“Your mom told me you always top your class,” I could sense a hit of pride in his tone as he spoke, and Mother gave me her brightest smile.

“I try my best,” I forced out a smile and Mom, brushed her hand in the air.

“Oh, don’t mind her. She has been topping her class for as long I can remember, and no one comes close.”

My mother never cared about my grade or how I performed in ass. She never even asked to check my result, but I didn’t dare to speak seeing how she was grinning from ear to ear like aroud mother

“Keep up with the good work,” Alpha Zane said, pushing his seat back as he rose to his feet. “You have to excuse me now, I’ve a few things to attend to.”

He turned to mother who gave him a sheepish smile. “I want to tch up with Nevach. I haven’t seen her in so long and missed her, you know?”

Alpha Zane looked between the two of us with a smile. “Of cour. I’ll be in my study room if you need anything.”

I knew she was only trying to look like the perfect mother in front of the Alpha. It’s no surprise Alpha Zane bought her lies from how she pampered me whenever he was watching. I wonded how many things she had lied about.

As soon as Kael and Alpha Zane were out of sight, she dragged me into my room and only released me once the door was slammed shut behind her.

“You ungrateful child.” she snapped as soon as we were alone. “How dare you appear in front of the Alpha with a sulky face?”

Her smile had long vanished and was now replaced with a frown I didn’t bother to reply, knowing how much my voice annoys her and just waited for her to speak again.

“I hope you have been at your best behavior while I was gone,” she raised her brows, and I just wished she’d leave already.

“Because I heard the maids whispering about some nonsense earlier, and it better not be true.”

“What did you hear, mom?” I asked, hoping she’d round this up and just leave me alone.

A frown tugged her lips as she spoke. “The maid was giggling like a fool, talking about how she saw you and Kael in the kitchen last night, and it looked like you were going to kiss if she hadn’t walked in.”

My eyes widened from the news and mother grabbed my hands aggressively. She didn’t even ask if it was true or not. Not like she ever cared to find out even the tiniest details about me, but I didn’t dare speak from the way her eyes were throwing daggers at me.

“You better stay the fuck away from him. He is the future Alpha. The strongest wolf in the pack after his father. Someone like him wouldn’t even take note of a worthless person like you, we weren’t living under the same roof,” she spat out.

“Know your place and act accordingly,” she warned. “If I ever hear something like that ever again, I won’t hesitate to throw you out before you ruin my marriage with whatever silly games you have up your sleeves.”

Tears pricked the corner of my eyes as she released my hands. I have heard worse insults from people, but hearing my mother calling me worthless to my face felt like a blade was twisted in my chest.

How can she think so low of her own child? Nothing I did was ever enough to impress her and that was fine, but hearing this felt like rubbing salt on my open wounds.

My mouth parted and before I could stop myself, I asked the dumbest question ever.

“W-what if you’re wrong, mom? What if he wants me?
