NEVAEH

Mother’s eyes flashed with rage. She threw her hands in the air, but before they could connect with my cheeks, a knock echoed through the room, and Alpha Zane pushed the door open.

You can’t imagine how much I missed you,” she said in a fake voice as she pulled away. “Next time we go on a vacation, I really hope you can join us.”

Alpha Zane smiled as he watched Mom pretending to be the best mother anyone could ever wish for. If only he knew.

“I’m sorry to break the moment, but I need to speak to Neveah.”

Mom stood beside me, wrapping her hands around my arm. Her grip was so hard, I was sure it’d leave a mark later, but I didn’t dare say a word since Alpha Zane was watching.

“Oh?” She drew her brows together as Alpha Zane spoke.

“I was going through the list of the invited guests to Kael’s coming of age ceremony when I noticed you weren’t there,” he said.

Mother waved her hands in the air, dismissing the conversation before it even started. “You don’t have to worry about that Nev hates parties.”

Alpha Zane didn’t seem convinced, though. “No, she’s a part of our family now, and it is only fair that she celebrates with the rest of us. After all, she is his sister.” He said to mom with the kindest smile I’ve ever seen, and my heart skipped a beat.

Sister?

Hearing Alpha Zane referred to me as Kael’s sister made a dread crawl in my chest. Mother must have sensed my discomfort. Her grip tightened against my arm, and I inhaled sharply.

Alpha Zane seemed to be a super cool and collected person, and sometimes, I couldn’t help but wonder where Kael got that cold attitude of his.

“Isn’t it supposed to be during the week? The whole activity can be a little exhausting, and she needs to go to bed early because of school”

I watched as different excuses rolled off her tongue and wondered when she even got the chance to rehearse all of that.

“And Nevach is really a shy girl. She gets anxious among the crowd, so maybe we can leave her out of this?”

Alpha Zane turned to look at me as if waiting for my response. You don’t mind joining us to support your brother, right? Your presence would be much appreciated.”

My mother dug her nails into my skin warning me to refuse his offer, but how could I when Alpha was personally inviting me to the event

I stayed in my room half of the day, too scared to run into my mother again or hear anymore of her condescending words, but eventually, I decided to take a stroll.

I couldn’t help but wonder why Kael didn’t seem the least excited about his coming of age ceremony. Every normal person I knew would have been over the moon to show the pack what they got and earn more respect.

He’d be announced as the heir on that day, even though everyone already knew he was the next Alpha. It wasn’t official until he had been announced in front of the whole pack.

His wolf special ability would also be revealed in front of everyone, which means people would not only fear but respect him and from what I have seen, he seemed to enjoy getting all the attention, so why did I feel like he wasn’t looking forward to the day?

“Or maybe you’re overthinking it,” a voice muttered in my head.

I brushed off the thought, wondering why I was so concerned about it anyway when my mother’s words rang in my head.

She wanted me to stay away from Kael, but she’d kill me if she came to learn about everything that happened while she was

away.

I headed downstairs when I caught a glimpse of him training at the front yard. I went out to watch him train before I could stop myself, and he was quite impressive.

He only had a pant on as he dueled with his instructor. The sun fast a soft glow on the sweat that trickled down his body, and I couldn’t stop myself from staring.

He looked so… hot.

I didn’t think he was good at fighting. Never saw him practice, but the way he avoided all his trainer’s punches like an expert left me drooling.

He struck his instructor down a few times, and when he finally got a break, I rushed to his side with a bottle of water.

His brows drew together suspiciously as he took the water from me. I didn’t miss how he kept looking at the bottle edge to see if it was already opened and a smile crept across my face.

He didn’t actually think I’d slip something into his water, did he

“What do you want?” He finally broke the silence as he opened the seal.

I hesitated for a while, contemplating between going back and telling him what I really wanted. He wouldn’t keep something a secret just because I asked, would he?

There’s only one way to find out.

“Can you erm… maybe not mention everything that happened my mother while she was away?”

My heart pounded in my chest as he snorted at my words. My mom will kill me if she hears I went to a club or was gullible enough to take a spiked drink and almost got in trouble.

Her reputation comes first and she’d kill me before I made her se face.

“Nothing comes for free,” he shrugged “What are you willing to live i

My heart skipped a beat from his question. Would he have asked Sabrina the same question if she was the one begging him? Or the girl he brought home the last time.

Focus Nevaeh, focus.

I swallowed the lumps that formed in my throat as I answered. can help with your assignment for a week. That way, you get to spend more time out without worrying about them.”

“No one would question me even if I didn’t submit them.” he chuckled and I knew he was right. “So your offer is pretty much useless to me.”

Dread crawled to my chest at the thought of his rejection. If he opened his mouth and spilled in front of my mother, that’d be the end of all the comfort I had been enjoying for weeks now.

My gaze dropped to the floor when he spoke again. “I have a better idea though.”

I snapped my head up to see a smug smile playing on his lips and my chest tightened.

“What is it?”
