Elara’s shrick sent the room into a tailspin.

“What? A fake painting as a birthday gift? That’s pathetic…”

“Exactly–if you can’t afford a real one, don’t bother. You’re just embarrassing yourself.”

Elara nodded so hard her cheeks shook.

“Absolutely! At first glance, it looks right, but I’ve seen Shane’s authentic work at auction–his signature is always just a single wolf–head seal, never a full name!”

“Huh, now that you mention it…” A lady leaned in for a closer look. “She’s right–why is the ful name ‘Shane Green‘ written out? As if the painter was afraid nobody would know who did it.”

Shreds fell from her fingers, drifting onto the red carpet, landing on the severed roses.

“Even if he were to give it away, it would go to your father, your brothers–that was the Conlays‘ glory, not yours alone.” Elara was on a roll now. “That makes it General Conlay’s heirloom! How could you bear to give it away? And if you truly don’t mind parting with it, isn’t that disrespectful to your dead father?”
