Thinking about Estelle’s face turning green with anger yesterday really did feel satisfying.
“But I only get one chance.
“His Majesty might tolerate me being bold once or twice. But there won’t be a third time. So…”
“So, you chose the perfect timing to strike?” Pearl suddenly understood. The worry on her face disappeared, replaced by admiration. “I was really afraid His Majesty would take her side!”
Laila only smiled and said nothing more.
The dining hall fell quiet. Sunlight streamed through the windows, casting scattered patches of light across the floor.
At that moment, steady footsteps sounded at the door.
Tobias walked in.
“Ms. Laila.”
Laila looked at him, waiting.
Tobias sat down across from her. “Your marriage has been decided. We all know Prince Vance will never inherit the dukedom. But Silvermoon Pack cannot be without an alpha. And the Conlay dukedom can’t stay empty either.”
“I know.” Laila nodded. “What do you suggest?”
“I suggest we select a few children outside and raise them in the pack. Later, we can choose the best one to inherit the dukedom.”
Laila nodded again. “That’s fine.”
“Good.” Tobias let out a breath of relief. Then he pulled out a stack of papers from his coat and handed them to her. “This is the list I had prepared. Take a look.”

These were all relatives who ran small businesses out of town. Their businesses were average. Their reputations were average too. A few of them even had records of unpaid debts and fighting over profits.
“These won’t work.”
Tobias sighed heavily. “Yes, none of them compare to your nephews…”
He remembered how outstanding Laila’s nephews had been at such a young age. Compared to them, these children were nowhere close. He felt helpless. “If only those damn assassins had spared the children, at least Silvermoon Pack would still have some bloodline left…”
He couldn’t finish his sentence.
Laila felt a sharp pain in her chest.
She remembered the year she came back from Moonlight Academy. Her nephews and nieces had crowded around her.
That was right after the news came that Kain and her brothers had died in battle. Every night, she cried quietly in her bed.
But the children had been so thoughtful. They always tried to cheer her up.
Especially Nicky’s son, Raymond Conlay.
He was incredibly smart. At just four years old, he spoke with clarity and confidence.

One time, when he saw her looking sad, he tiptoed over and climbed onto her lap. He said seriously, “Aunt Laila, Mom says if you’re unhappy, eating honey candy will make better. I’ll sneak out and buy you some honey candy, okay?”
When he spoke, his eyes sparkled. When he smiled, two tiny teeth showed.
His eyes looked just like his mother’s. Light amber. Warm and gentle when he smiled.
