Laila’s wolf eyes instantly narrowed into sharp vertical slits. She was still gripping Maris by the collar when she turned her head and said to Pearl, “Go watch Raymond. Don’t let him leave the room.”

Pearl had been glaring at Maris as well. When she heard the order, she replied, “Okay. I’ll go right now.”

She ran out the door and hurried toward the back courtyard where Raymond was staying.

When Maris saw the suddenly dark and terrifying look in Laila’s eyes, a chill ran through her heart, but she still demanded harshly, “What are you trying to do?”

Laila grabbed her by the collar and dragged her to her feet, then hauled her straight out of the hall.

The cold wind howled outside, blowing Maris’s hair loose around her temples. Panic rose in her chest for no clear reason, yet she could not break free from Laila’s grip. Laila’s hand was like iron. Once it tightened, Maris could not escape.

“What are you doing? Where are you taking me? Are you trying to kill me? You can’t touch me. Let go of me. Laila, let go of me! Where are you taking me?”

Maris’s screams were carried away by the roaring northern wind. At last, snow began to fall from the sky. One flake, then another, swirling down and landing on Laila’s shoulders.

But beneath that gloomy sky, it was clear that a heavy snowstorm was coming.

Laila dragged her all the way to the sacred grove of Silvermoon Pack and threw her hard onto the ground.

Maris lifted her head in panic and looked around. Directly in front of her stood a rock wall. Rows of recessed niches had been carved into the stone. Inside each niche rested a carefully polished soul plaque.

Pale blue spirit lamps hung along the stone wall. Their flames flickered softly, like the breathing of sleeping souls.

Before Maris could even finish the scream rising in her throat, Laila grabbed her by the hair and dragged her to the lowest row of niches.

She was forced to bend forward, her eyes landing directly on one soul plaque. On the dark stone surface, a name had been carved.

“He was Tim Conlay. My older brother’s son. Eleven years old. The first time he went hunting, he killed a full–grown forest wolf by himself.” Laila suddenly yanked her again and dragged her to the next niche.

“This was my grandmother. My mother. My eldest sister–in–law. My second sister–in–law. My niece. My nephew…”

Maris’s whole body trembled violently as she struggled with all her strength. “Are you crazy? Why did you bring me here? I had no grudge against the Conlays…”

The slap came down hard across her face, accompanied by Laila’s furious shout.

“No grudge? You slaughtered surrendered soldiers and massacred towns at the Lovanfall Battlefield. The assassins from the Solantia Kingdom took revenge for everything you did by targeting my family. Why did they die? Because of you. Because you were greedy for military glory. Because you were cruel and vicious. You broke the agreement between our kingdom and the Solantia Kingdom that civilians would never be killed.”

“No…” Maris gasped heavily, shaking her head violently. “No, that’s not true.”
