Laila’s voice sounded distant and hollow. “But my family will never come back. And it was all because of you. Tell me, how could I not hate you? I held it in for so long. I didn’t want to touch you. But why did you have to come knocking on my door? You gained military merit at the Lovanfall Battlefield. Before the full truth reached me, even when you and Holt used the war to arrange your marriage and tried to replace me as the Luna of Ironclaw Pack, I still respected you. You were a woman, a beta, yet you were willing to go to the battlefield and fight for the kingdom.”
She slowly walked closer, her shadow completely covering Maris. “But the truth was so ugly. You gained merit, and the price was the slaughter of my entire family. Yet you still had the nerve to strut in front of me and talk about how much you looked down on noblewomen like me. You acted so capable, so proud of your integrity. But how exactly did you scheme to take my property? The way you chased after military glory was ugly. The way you chased after money was even uglier. A hundred times uglier than your face is now.”
Maris braced her hands on the ground and burst into loud sobs. “Stop talking. Please stop talking…”
Laila bent down slightly, a mocking smile curling at the corner of her lips. “That’s all you can take? You said you looked down on women who fought over men. You even said you were willing for the three of us, you, Holt, and me, to share him. Then why did you come to see me today? You wanted me to go talk to Victoria and tell her not to marry Holt? Maris, you can’t stand the idea of Victoria entering the pack. You’ve realized that your so–called love was just a joke. The more proud and arrogant you were in front of me back then, the more pathetic you look now.”
Maris’s lips trembled as she tried to argue back. But then she remembered the chaos and constant fighting between her and Holt recently. Wasn’t it all because he wanted to make Victoria the primary Luna?
Laila’s eyes turned even colder. “Maris, remember this well. They all died because of you. You should be grateful that I was born into the Conlays. If it were not for our family rules, and if I didn’t have to protect the kingdom’s reputation, even if it meant dying together with you, I would still cut you into a thousand pieces and grind your bones into dust.”
She opened the door. Outside, the snow had grown heavier. It scattered across the ground like fine grains of salt. The sky hung low and dark as the snow fell faster and faster.
Laila’s voice was colder than the snow outside. “Pay for the vase, then get out. Don’t ever come here again. I will kill you.”

Maris’s heart trembled. At that moment, she truly felt fear. Laila was absolutely capable of doing it. The killing intent in her voice was impossible to hide.
She slowly struggled to her feet. “I… I didn’t bring any money.”
“Then write an IOU and sign your name. Send someone tomorrow with the money,” Laila said coldly.
Maris gave a weak nod.
Maris’s POV:
After signing the IOU and walking out of the Silvermoon Pack’s wolf den, I leaned against a large tree in a miserable state, gasping for breath. The cold wind made me shiver, yet a fine layer of cold sweat covered my forehead.
For a moment, my heart felt completely dead. The next moment, I felt that what Laila said was wrong. But I could not explain what exactly was wrong.
