I snapped back, still furious about what had happened yesterday. Estelle looked angry too. But she held it in and didn’t lash out at me.

“Morgana, I know you like Samuel. I’m here to help you. But if you really don’t need me, I can turn around and leave right now. The question is, can you really do this on your own?”

Of course I couldn’t.

I lowered my head, feeling so wronged I could hardly stand it. Why didn’t Samuel like me? Why did he have to become mates with Laila, and so quickly too?

“Morgana, I understand you. I know what it’s like to love someone you can never have.”

Estelle’s voice suddenly softened. “Back then, I loved him so much. And what did I get in the end? Nothing. I don’t want you to end up like me, living a life full of regret.”

I looked up. I’d never seen Estelle like this before. Her eyes were red, and tears shimmered at the corners. Her face was full of remorse.

If I lost Samuel, would I become like that too? Would I just pick some male at random to become mates with, then spend every day afterward drowning in regret and misery?

Panic rose in me all at once. I couldn’t help grabbing her arm. “Okay, okay, I’ll listen to you. Tell me. What do I have to do to stop their mating ceremony?”

Laila’s POV:

“Morgana really is kind of interesting.”

As I wrote out the invitations for the mating ceremony, I came to Morgana’s name and couldn’t help laughing under my breath. I honestly did think she was pretty interesting. She was spoiled, bossy, and hard to deal with, sure, but she was also easy to coax. As long as no one misled her, she probably wouldn’t do anything truly bad.

And now that she was staying with Frostwind Pack, someone like Estelle probably wouldn’t be able to fool her anymore.

“That’s right,” I said, then looked up at him. “Honestly, if you think she’s not bad, you could always take her back to Moonlight Academy and let her study there. Then she wouldn’t have time to come bother me.”

“You!” Shane said with a laugh. A moment later, though, he grew thoughtful. “That might not be a bad idea. At yesterday’s gallery exhibit, I could tell she was a little infatuated with Samuel. But maybe even she doesn’t understand whether that feeling is love or just dependence.”

Everyone knew Princess Morgana was the adopted daughter of the former Alpha King. That angle hadn’t occurred to me. She’d been so young when she was adopted that I really didn’t think she’d fall in love with her own brother.

“Oh, it’s definitely just dependence. Samuel only sees her as a sister too.”

“I think so too.” Shane nodded. “She’s just a little kid. What does she know about love?”

Then he suddenly glanced at me before looking away again. “One of these days, I’ll ask Mr. Westmark whether he’d be interested in taking on a princess as a student.”

“I wonder if he’d scold us.”

Just thinking about Aerith’s dark expression whenever he taught us made me laugh. Back at Moonlight Academy, I was always causing trouble and constantly challenging students above my grade.

Every time he saw me, he’d get a headache and mutter about being too old for this kind of torment, swearing he’d never take another student again.

But after laughing for a while, I remembered that I still hadn’t gotten a reply from him, and worry crept in again.

“Do you think something happened to Mr. Westmark? I’ve written him several letters, and he hasn’t replied to any of them.”

“What could happen to him? Don’t worry. He’s probably just busy with something else. When he has time, he’ll write back.”

Once Shane said that, it sounded reasonable, and I relaxed. Besides, if something had really happened at Moonlight Academy, Tracy definitely would’ve known. And before this, she’d still been exchanging letters with Shane and never mentioned anything about the academy, so it probably really was fine.
