Most of the scent had already faded, but a trace of it still remained. When she’d returned to Silvermoon Pack earlier, she’d gone out of her way to find it again, thinking she could show it to Samuel once she saw him.

Samuel took the box, lifted it closer, and inhaled lightly.

“I can’t tell what it is either, but something about this scent makes me uneasy.”

He frowned. “My wolf spirit seems uncomfortable too.”

Laila nodded. “I feel the same way.”

Samuel’s brow furrowed deeper. “I’ll investigate this. If Estelle really is connected to the Umbra Order, then what she’s done over the years is probably far more vicious than we’ve imagined.

“And all these years, she’s been raising money while telling everyone publicly that she’s been losing it. Even Morgana has been tricked out of quite a lot by her. So all that money went to Damian.”

“Yes. But be careful,” Laila said. “When you investigate, don’t let His Majesty find out.”

King Vaughn was already wary of Samuel. If he discovered Samuel was secretly investigating the Alpha of Bloodmoon Pack, there was no telling what conclusions he’d jump to.

And as for all this, there was still no proof. Even if they told him, he wouldn’t believe it.

After all, Damian’s public image had always been that of a weak, incompetent, lustful, money–grubbing fool, the sort of man least likely to plot for the throne.

When Samuel heard that, he smiled at once. “Are you worried about me?”

Laila’s face flushed, and she quickly changed the subject. “When you secretly went to Moonlit Valley last time, His Majesty didn’t find out, did he?”

“Of course not,” Samuel said. “Laila, you really are worried about me.”

Laila’s face turned even redder. She didn’t really want to admit it, but she couldn’t come up with any other excuse on the spot, so she simply said goodbye instead.

“It’s getting late. I should go back.”

She turned to leave, but Samuel caught her wrist.

“Wait, Laila.” His voice dropped low, “We still haven’t discussed when we’re going to hold the mating ceremony again.”

Not far away, the servants couldn’t hear what they were saying, but they were all watching their Alpha closely. Including Luke.

ago.

Laila knew none of this. And she didn’t know how to answer Samuel’s question either.
