Laila paused.

But the girl kept going, her words spilling out faster and faster. “Today, when we went to the Ironclaw Pack, we didn’t even plan to ask them for donations. We all know they’re dirt poor, so if they could scrape together even a coin, it’d be a miracle. We’d been traveling all day, and our throats were dry as sand, so asking for a cup of water shouldn’t have been too much, right?”
“And then?” she let out a cold laugh.
“Maris leaned against the doorway and looked us up and down like we were mud on the roadside.
“Then she said, ‘Oh? You’re still dragging your granddaughters around to beg at this age?“”
The youngest granddaughter’s eyes instantly turned red, her voice rising sharply.
“What right does she have to say that? Not a single coin Grandma collects ever goes into her own pocket! She lives frugally and donates most of what she owns! When the Ironclaw Pack had a famine last winter, who secretly sent them two carts of grain? It was Grandma! She even did it anonymously!
“And yet Maris–someone who’s never given a single thing–has the nerve to call her a beggar!”
By the end, her chest was heaving, and her eyes were brimming with tears.
Laila’s brows knitted together.
Margaret shot her a sharp look. “Enough. Don’t say another word.”
Then, she turned to Laila. “Ms. Conlay, don’t take this to heart. And don’t start any conflict with Ironclaw Pack because of me.”
She knew about Laila’s past with that pack, and she knew exactly how exhausting it was to deal with those people.
Laila had already moved on, so there was no reason to get entangled with them again.
Her granddaughter froze, then hurriedly added, “Right, right, Ms. Conlay, I just got emotional. I wasn’t trying to get you to go against them.”
“I understand.” Laila nodded.
After they left, Pearl looked puzzled. “Ms. Conlay, is Maris mentally unstable or something? How does she dare insult Mrs. Odonnell? She’s the former Luna of Blackrock Pack, and she’s respected and powerful. Even Jenna wouldn’t openly go against
her.”
Viola scoffed. “Maybe she’d just had a fight at home and needed someone to lash out at. She saw the old lady come asking for donations and snapped. She’s always been unhinged anyway. Either way, forget about her. Just hearing her name annoys me.”
Laila nodded, “Yes. It has nothing to do with us.”
Strangely enough, her time in Ironclaw Pack now felt like something from a distant past. It felt as if it had happened years ago.
Two days later, word somehow spread. Maris calling Margaret an “old beggar” reached the entire Rydar Kingdom.

The kingdom was shaken.
And it wasn’t because of the disaster, though severe, it was still just a natural calamity.
What truly ignited outrage was that Maris had insulted Margaret.
Who was Margaret?

For decades, every winter, she had distributed warm clothing and food. Whenever disaster struck, she was always the first to lend a
hand.
The victims, holding what she gave them, swallowed their tears because they could feel the sincerity.
Even King Vaughn had publicly praised her. “This is what dignity among wolves looks like.”
And now someone had pointed at her and called her a beggar. Who could tolerate that?
