Chapter 296 Samuel Has Changed His Mind

Margaret raised a tired hand. “Enough. I’m tired. Whatever you said to me that day, I no longer remember it. The people of Blackrock Pack don’t remember it either. When you walk out of here today, everyone will see you leave. I doubt anyone will trouble you over this matter again.”

Something taut inside Holt finally went slack.

He’d been sure Maris’s reckless words would make the old Luna see red.

Thank the Moon, she’d let it go.

Not that any of those words would mean anything to Maris.

Maris’s heart was so packed with bitterness and resentment that there was no room left for kindness, no matter how gently it was

offered.

Once they were outside Blackrock Pack, Maris climbed into the carriage, her face like ice. Holt stood looking at the carriage for a long moment before, finally, climbing in himself..

The ride home was silent. Neither of them could even bring themselves to look at the other.

Two people who had once sworn to love only each other for the rest of their lives now couldn’t stand the sight of one another.

Holt could barely remember how things had been the first time he’d brought Maris back to Ironclaw Pack.

He vaguely remembered that he’d gone to Maris first. Then he’d gone to find Laila. Then he’d marked her.

And then, from above her, he’d told her that he was going to make Maris his secondary Luna.

He’d even told Laila that, if she wanted, he would let her raise the pups he’d have with Maris.

At the time, he’d genuinely believed he was being respectful. Even protective.

But looking back now, the whole memory was grotesque,

Like handing someone a single penny and expecting a parade in return.

He had never, not once, truly understood Laila.

He knew she’d studied at Moonlight Academy.

But he’d always assumed–what could an omega like her possibly have learned in a place like that?

And Maris–Maris had been willing to walk onto a battlefield and bleed for the kingdom’s peace, willing to lay down her life for its borders. He’d been utterly entranced.

As Alpha of Ironclaw Pack, he had to think of his pack first. He’d always been determined to restore Ironclaw to its former glory, to return it to the ranks of the seven great packs.

So back then, beyond his genuine feelings for Maris, he’d been hoping for an ally–a partner who could lift the pack with him.

But never, not for a single moment, had he imagined any of this ending the way it had.

Laila had asked the king, with that flat, terrible finality, to dissolve their mate bond. And she had hidden so much from him.

But what if it had been Samuel?

Would she have made the same decision?

Had she ever even respected him?

Holt’s hands clenched into fists. A thought began to take root in him–a hope that Samuel would fall for some other woman. And then… what would Laila do?

No–maybe Samuel had already changed his mind?

Yes, Samuel had stood at that mating ceremony and announced that Laila was the Luna he’d chosen. But Holt’s beta had told him that in all the days since, Samuel hadn’t gone to see Laila even once.

If he truly loved her, how could he stand to stay away?

Holt’s heart stirred faintly. If Samuel really had changed his mind, then Laila…

“Stop the carriage!”

Maris’s voice cut through Holt’s thoughts.

The driver pulled the carriage to a halt. Maris stood up, ready to climb out.

Holt grabbed her arm. “Where are you going?”

“That’s none of your business.”

“Enough, Maris. Whose life are you trying to ruin now?”

“I’m not trying to ruin anyone’s life. I just want to clear my head. Is that not allowed? Holt, are you putting me under house arrest

now?”

“That’s not what I-”

“Then let me go!”

Maris was insistent. Holt could only relent. “Fine. As long as you promise not to bring trouble down on me–or on Ironclaw Pack- you can go wherever you want.”

“I promise. No trouble for you. No trouble for Ironclaw Pack. There. Happy?”

“Fine. Fine…”

Holt let go. He still wanted to say something, but Maris was already out of the carriage.

Her figure was swallowed by the crowd within moments.

“I’m still uneasy,” Holt said through the mind link to Vick.

“Then go after her,” Vick growled.

After a moment of consideration, Holt followed.

He could still catch traces of Maris’s scent in the air.

But in the end, he found he’d worried for nothing. Maris had only gone to a small jewelry shop, where she was idly browsing the displays.

He watched for a while, decided there was nothing to it, and left.
