Chapter 40 Maris‘ Hidden Plan

Laila’s POV:

Lieutenant colonel? Did I really get promoted that high?

I’d fought in exactly one battle, and I’d gone straight from a nameless foot soldier to lieutenant colonel.

I stared at Prince Vance, stunned, a flicker of worry rising that others might resent it. But to my surprise, every general in the tent looked at me with nothing but approval. Not a trace of dissatisfaction anywhere.

“You earned it,” Samuel said quietly, giving my shoulder a light pat.

Only then did Manu, Stick, and the others finally dare to celebrate.

“Yes! We’re captains now. 100 soldiers each!”

“Laila really is something. Lieutenant colonel on her first battle. Still the strongest in our class.”

“That’s amazing, Laila!”

“Thank you.”

After the brief celebration, Prince Vance dismissed everyone else and kept me behind.

Nita lashed her tail in alarm inside my head. “What’s he doing? Don’t tell me he’s about to confess. You’re not allowed to say yes, Laila.”

ignored her. I honestly couldn’t understand why she was so convinced Prince Vance had been secretly in love with me for years. It made no sense.

Even if my father had been Rydar’s most legendary marshal, I’d never been particularly close to the Royal Court nobility. If anything, the Alpha King was the one I’d interacted with most.

“Your Highness,” I asked directly, “did you want something from me?”

“Sit,” Samuel said.

He took a seat first. The blood on his face hadn’t been cleaned off yet, and his beard was clotted and dark, rough and filthy. Only his eyes were still bright and sharp. I nodded and sat as well

He pulled a sealed letter from the desk and handed it to me. “This is why Solantia Kingdom allied with the Ovila Kingdom.”

My breath caught.

He’d found it.

My hands shook as I took the letter. Whatever was written inside explained not only the alliance, but the brutal slaughter of my mother and my people.

Samuel frowned when he noticed my trembling. He reached out and wrapped a band around my wrist, steady and warm. Strangely, my racing heart slowed again.
